THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime women's soccer team defeated the St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) Bears on Tuesday evening by the score of 3-0 on Reinhart Field.

For the second time this season the Privateers held a team scoreless as junior goalkeeper Kristen Hoar (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore East) picked up the clean sheet for her second of the season, and seventh of her career as she is now Maritime's all-time leader in shutouts. Hoar also picked up the 12th win of her career as she tied the Maritime all-time record for career victories.

In addition to Hoar's six saves on the evening, Maritime got a pair of goals from freshman Julianna Avitto (Lindenhurst, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) as well as one from sophomore Marisa Athan (Mineola, N.Y./Mineola), who also picked up an assist on the evening. For Athan it was her 12th career tally, which moved her up to fourth on the Privateer all-time goals list, in a tie with Christina George '11.

The game began with the Bears opening up with a shot less than 30 seconds into the opening half that sailed high over the net. After regaining possession, Maritime got the ball to senior Gabrielle Fox (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg), who rang a shot off the crossbar, vying for her first career goal in her first game of the season.

The two sides remained in a scoreless draw into the halftime break with Maritime outshooting St. Joseph's by a 7-4 margin, with corner kicks also in favor of the Privateers at a 7-2 advantage.

Maritime's offense picked up the pace in the second period as sophomore Kathleen Burns (Islip, N.Y./Islip) opened the period with a left-footed shot that went wide right of the post just several minutes into the half. Burns continued to take her chances with two more shots in the ensuing minutes, but was unable to find the back of the net.

In the 54th minute of play, Athan took a shot from about 20-yards out that was sent towards the top right corner of the goal, past the St. Joseph's goalkeeper to open up the scoring. For Athan, it was her fourth goal of the campaign.

Maritime continued its offensive attack about 10 minutes later when Athan sent a pass towards the center of the box, that Avitto took a one-timed shot on to put past Nicole Farinella to increase the Privateer lead to two.

The Privateers were awarded a penalty kick with 66:09 on the clock, but freshman Gayle Woods (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) had her shot stopped to keep the advantage at two.

With time working in Maritime's favor, the Privateers had one last offensive attack as Avitto took a hard shot towards the keeper that crossed the goal plane with less than one second remaining in regulation to put Maritime ahead by three tallies. The final horn then sounded as the Privateers picked up their third victory of the season.

Final shots saw Maritime lead with a 24-11 differential, while final corner kicks were 11-4 in favor of the Privateers. Hoar picked up the win with her six saves on the evening, while Farinella took her first defeat on the year despite making 12 saves for the game.
