THROGGS NECK, NY – Emani Abdool (Islandia, NY) accomplished something on Tuesday night that hadn't been done since 2009—score twice in her debut for the Maritime College women's soccer team. She became the first Privateer freshman with two goals in the season opener since Meghan Burke against Berkeley 17 years ago to the day. It wasn't enough for Maritime (0-1-0), however, as the Privateers suffered a 6-2 loss to Pratt (1-0-0) at Reinhart Field.
Alyssa Trujillo gave the Cannoneers a 1-0 lead in the 23
rd minute, then Pratt doubled its advantage in the 38
th minute. Trujillo and Chloe Tien scored 37 seconds apart early in the second half to increase the margin to 4-0 before Tien added another in the 59
th minute.
In the 61
st minute, Abdool intercepted a pass, turned around and fired from 25 yards out, and put it into the back of the net to get Maritime on the board. After the Cannoneers' Kate Nolan scored in the 80
th minute, Abdool responded less than two minutes later.
Richae Gibson (Freeport, Bahamas) deflected a goal kick and headed it to Abdool, who completed the brace with a blast from the right side.
Trujillo had two goals of her own for Pratt, while Tien finished with two goals and an assist. Emma Pratt contributed a goal and two assists for the Cannoneers, and Nolan notched a goal and an assist. Savannah DePaz (1-0-0) started in net and earned the win after playing the first 58-plus minutes.
For the Privateers,
Devon Etienne (Garden City, NY) (0-1-0) was credited with 10 saves. Gibson's assist, meanwhile, was the second of her collegiate career and her first since Sept. 3, 2024 against Yeshiva. With Abdool finding the back of the net twice, Maritime has now had a player score multiple goals in the season opener three times in the past four years.
The Privateers' next four contests will all be away from Reinhart Field. Maritime begins the string by visiting Brooklyn (0-0-0) at 4 p.m. on Friday.
