All-Time Series: Avoiding Par
Maritime is 3-2 all-time against Merchant Marine in their head-to-head matchups dating back to the 2009 season. After the Privateers had won the first three matchups, the Mariners have come back to win each of the last two including last season's 7-6 win on Reinhart Field.

In last season's edition of the 'Seafaring Scuffle', the Privateers opened up the scoring with a 93-yard drive that was capped off by a 47-yard touchdown reception by Greg Caneparo (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet). A missed extra point proved to be costly, as the Privateer defense allowed just one score in the closing minutes of the second quarter, which allowed the Mariners to escape with a one-point win.

The Bumpy Road
Since putting together a nine-game road-winning streak against Division III opponents during the 2010-11 seasons, the Privateers have lost six losses in their last eight road games since the start of the 2012 season.

Not One…But TWO!

Scouting the Privateers
After splitting its first two games of the season, the Privateers will look to push over the .500 mark on the season with a win against the Merchant Marine Mariners on Saturday.

Junior quarterback Zack Chilcott (Ulster Park, N.Y./Kingston), who set a new program record with 319 yards of total offense last week, the only player to ever eclipse 300 yards, will highlight the Privateer offense. Included in his 319 yards was 168 yards of passing, as he completed 9 of 14 passing attempts. His favorite target was sophomore Brian Leonard (Selden, N.Y./Centereach), who hauled in three catches, while junior Andrew Short (Covington, La./St. Paul's) and sophomore Nick Fischetti (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) each had two receptions.

The running game was also effective for the Privateers, as Chilcott collected 151 yards on the ground and also two scores. Senior Greg Caneparo (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) collected 116 yards, while senior fullback Kyle Gardner (Amityville N.Y./St. Anthony’s) picked up several key first downs in the second half as he carried the ball 21 times for 73 yards.

The Maritime offensive line of John Cimetta (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington), J.T. Kennedy (Blauvelt, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional), Brandon Kuster (Woodstock, N.Y./Kingston), Casey Boos (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) and Joseph Tanguay (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) have had a nice start to the year as the team has accumulated 604 yards on the ground, while the line has also not allowed a sack through two contests in 2014.

The well-balanced Maritime defense had another strong effort as one player from every tier of defense was one of Maritime's top-three tacklers from a week ago. On the defensive line senior Hugh O'Brien (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) was third on the team with seven tackles. Senior linebacker Duke Alvora (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) was second on the team with eight, while in the secondary cornerback Brian Price (New York, N.Y./Wadleigh) led the team with nine wrap-ups.

Junior Andrew Auriemma (Melville, N.Y./St. Anthony’s) also had a sack, while senior Chris Klass (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) contributed with his two interceptions and also blocked an extra point in his eventful week.

On special teams, junior Diogo Dietrich (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/DePaul Catholic) opened up the scoring with a 24-yard field goal to close out the first quarter, on his only attempt of the night. Rookie Matthew Murphy (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) accumulated 435 yards on his seven kickoffs, including a pair of touchbacks. Sophomore punter, John Arny (Metuchen, N.J./Metuchen) collected 134 yards on his four punts for an average of 33.5 yards per kick.

Scouting the Mariners
Merchant Marine also enters with a 1-1 record on the season with a win over non-NCAA member Newport Apprentice School in its opener, before getting knocked off in its annual matchup against Coast Guard last week by a 42-31 score.

Junior quarterback Matthew McDaniels, who has been held in check through two games this year, has accumulated just 201 yards on the ground to go along with his eight completions for 117 yards to lead the Mariner offense. Junior back Mario Colangelo is second on the team with 172 yards, and also three scores on the ground this season to lead the team.

On defense, sophomore defensive back Patrick Keyes leads the team with 19 tackles on the year, followed closely by a pair of seniors. Linebacker Matthew Jernigan and d-lineman Cody Fields are second and third on the team with 16 and 12 tackles respectively; while junior linebacker Charles Helms also has a dozen wrap-ups.

A pair of rookies has split the kicking duties through this point in the season as Erik Swayne has connected on 1-of-2 field goals, while converting all four of his PAT attempts. Classmate Sean McDonough, has been perfect to start his career with a 30-yard field goal and a pair of PATs. Swayne also handles the punting duties, and has collected 354 yards on 10 punts this season.

UP NEXT
Maritime will continue its month-long stint away from Reinhart Field with a bye week during week four, followed by the opening of ECFC play on Saturday, October 4 on the road against Mount Ida.

Merchant Marine will have one of its toughest tests of the season next weekend, when the Mariners open up Liberty League action with a battle against nationally ranked Hobart. Last season, the Statesmen won the Liberty League's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament, and knocked off ECFC Champion Gallaudet in the first round of action a season ago.
