BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Maritime women's soccer team picked up its first victory of the 2014 season in a lopsided affair with the York (N.Y.) Cardinals on Wednesday evening by the score of 9-1 at the Aviator Complex.

The win was the first-ever victory for first-year head coach Brittany Ross, as she took the helm of the program prior to the start of the season. "The girls played well, so it's an exciting win to start off the season with," commented Ross after the victory. "It was nice that they [the players] were able to find the back of the net…so that was a good way to start it off," she added.

The eight-goal victory was tied for the 5th largest goal differential in program history as the Privateers eased to the win.

Sophomore Marisa Athan (Mineola, N.Y./Mineola) led the Privateers with three goals on the evening as she became the 15th player in program history to collect at least three goals in a single match, and first to do so since Jorrie Trenkamp '14 netted a hat trick against Canton on September 29 of last season.

In addition to Athan, sophomore Kathleen Burns (Islip, N.Y./Islip) collected two goals, as did freshman Gayle Woods (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia), for both, it was the first two goals of their careers. Senior Jaime Rocco (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) picked up the second goal of her career, while rookie Julianna Avitto (Lindenhurst, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) picked up her first career strike.

Woods also tied a program record as she collected three assists on the contest, becoming just the third player in the team's nine-year history to notch three helpers in one match. Avitto also had two assists, while Athan picked up one of her own.

The scoring began early for the Privateers, as Athan worked her way down the field after the opening whistle and took a shot on a breakaway, then collected her own rebound and sent the ball past the Cardinal netminder just 39 seconds into the match to put Maritime ahead by a 1-0 score. With the 39-second strike, the goal proved to be the fourth fastest goal at the start of the game in program history
