Women’s Soccer Drops Road Game At Cazenovia

        CAZENOVIA, N.Y. (Aug. 31, 2014) – The Maritime women's soccer team lost the final game of its weekend road trip Upstate, 4-0, Sunday afternoon at Cazenovia College. The Privateers fall to 0-2 on the young season, while the Wildcats improve to 2-0.
 
        Cazenovia scored in just the second minute when junior Kaitlyn Lyon finished off a pass from sophomore Briana Bailey. The Privateers had a great opportunity to even the score in the 16th minute, but back-to-back shots by junior Caroline Reynolds (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) and sophomore Marisa Athan (Mineola, N.Y./Mineola) were both saved by the Wildcats' freshman keeper Lauren Gee and a third shot by Athan was blocked in front of the goal. Just over three minutes later, sophomore Jane Quinn (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) had a shot saved by Gee.
 
        The home team took over possession for the next 10-plus minutes and struck again in the 36th minute when junior Christina Clemente found the back of the net. Sophomore Esther Lyon assisted on the second tally. Two late shots by Maritime freshman Nadia Manzueta (New York, N.Y./Washington Heights Expeditionary) and Reynolds went wide and high. The shots were even at seven apiece after the first 45 minutes.
 
The second half saw Cazenovia come out strong, as Bailey scored just under two minutes into play to make it 3-0. The Wildcats controlled play throughout the half, outshooting the Privateers, 14-1, in the stanza. Esther Lyon closed out the scoring in the 86th minute after receiving a pass from junior Rachael McDonough.
 
In net, junior Kristen Hoar (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore East) made 11 saves in the full 90 minutes for the Privateers. On the other side, Gee had three saves in the opening half and was replaced by junior Kara Locey for the second half, who made one stop.
 
The Privateers will be back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 3, when they travel to nearby Lehman College. The game's scheduled to start at 5 p.m. at the Lightning's South Field.
