Volleyball Swept by Manhattanville, John Jay in Season-Opening Tri-Match

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Maritime volleyball team fell in both ends of the Manhattanville tri-match on Saturday afternoon at Kennedy Gymnasium falling to the host Valiants and the John Jay Bloodhounds by the score of 3-0 in the pair of matches.
 
Freshman Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) led the squad with 13 kills on the afternoon, including eight in the match against John Jay. Senior Charlotte Acklin (Lewes, Del./West Broward (Fla.)) led the defensive side of the ball with 23 digs. Sophomore Carly Lombardo (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) had 11 kills and 11 assists, while both she and Brady led the team with four blocks each. Senior Christine McCormack (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen) held the team lead with 15 assists on the afternoon as well.
 
In the opener, the Privateers opened up a 4-2 advantage on Manhattanville as freshman Gabrielle Kempski (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) put down a service ace, the first of her team-high four on the afternoon. The Valiants then went on a 20-4 run to open up a take a 22-8 advantage. Kempski and Lombardo brought the team closer with a pair of kills back-to-back, but Manhattanville hung on for the win in the opening set.
 
In the second set, Maritime hung with Manhattanville as an attacking error by the Valiants put Maritime within four at 15-11. The Valiants went on to take the second set by a score of 25-15.
 
The Privateers started out strong once again in the third set, as Maritime opened a 6-3 advantage, which included a stretch of two more service aces by Kempski. However, the Valiants came back to take the third set 25-13, to earn the victory in straight sets.
 
The second match of the afternoon, pitted the Privateers against the Bloodhounds of John Jay. In the opening set, Maritime jumped ahead to an early 3-1 lead, but then became involved in a back-and-forth affair as John Jay took the lead. Maritime pulled within one at 8-7, but were unable to take the first set, falling by a 25-20 margin.
 
The two squads continued battle through the second set as the lead changed hands on seven separate occasions before the Bloodhounds came out on top with the 25-22 second set win.
 
The third set saw Maritime jump out to a quick 4-0 lead, but the stingy John Jay team refused to let the Privateers add to their lead as John Jay answered with nine straight to take an 11-6 lead. Maritime then rattled off four unanswered points to pull back within one. The Privateers pulled within one point on three more occasions in the set, but could not even the score with John Jay, who escaped with a 25-22 third set to earn the straight sets win.
 
Maritime (0-2) will look to its home court advantage to help the team to its first win of the season, as the Privateers open up the home portion of their slate with a Tuesday evening matchup against Medgar Evers at 7 p.m. from Riesenberg Hall. Manhattanville(3-0) will return to the court on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. as the Valiants will travel to take on the College of New Rochelle. John Jay (1-3) will take the week off and take on Montclair State next Saturday, September 6 at 1 p.m.
