NEW LONDON, Conn. (March 1, 2014) – The Maritime mixed rifle team defeated the VMI women's squad, 2125-2071, on Saturday to claim the Mid-Atlantic Rifle Conference Smallbore Sharpshooter Division Championship. On the air rifle side, the Privateers lost to top-seeded John Jay, 2223-2152, to finish second in the expert division.

Maritime shot its best smallbore score of the season, topping its previous best of 2090 by 35 points. Freshman Bradley Boomhower (Greenville, N.Y./Greenville) "brought the boom" this weekend, leading the Privateers in smallbore with a match-best score of 543. He shot a score of 90 or better (out of 100) on four of his six cards, including two 93's – one on his first kneeling card and the other on his second prone (lying down) card.

Senior Allison Lashmet (DeFreestville, N.Y./Columbia) wasn't far behind Boomhower, as she shot a 540 in the smallbore competition. She also led the way for the Privateers on the air rifle side, shooting a 557. Senior Robert Depietri (Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) finished third on the squad in smallbore with a 533 and junior Barry Potts (South Brunswick Township, N.J./South Brunswick) rounded out the scoring with a 509.

The smallbore win was a bit of revenge for the Privateers over the VMI Women, as the Lady Keydets defeated Maritime in the air rifle divisional championship at the MACs back in 2012.

In the air rifle match against local rivals John Jay, the Privateers saw Potts shoot the team's second-best score of 539, while senior Joe Holomshek (Mount Sinai, N.Y./Mount Sinai) registered a 529 and junior Dan Strahan (Levittown, N.Y./Island Trees) closed out the scoring with a 527. John Jay was on point on Saturday and shot its best match of the year in air rifle, making it real rough on the Privateers in the expert division championship.

This was the fourth MAC divisional championship in the past six seasons for Maritime. The Privateers won in air rifle in 2008 and 2010, while the smallbore team took home the sharpshooter division championship last season. The team is showing great signs of progress within the MAC Conference, having moved up a division in both air rifle and smallbore from where the squad was last year.
