CASTINE, MAINE (March 16, 2014) – The Maritime men's lacrosse team came all the way back from a five-goal deficit to defeat the Maine Maritime Mariners by the score of 10-9 in overtime in the final game of the 2014 Maritime Cup.
Even though the Maritime Cup was already won by Mass. Maritime with a pair of wins on Friday and Saturday. The Privateers did have four players selected to the All-Tournament team including senior
Paul Grubb (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun), along with sophomores
Jonathan Strezenec (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun),
Peter Rooney (Long Beach, N.Y./Chaminade) and
Matt Hayes (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin), who was selected as the top face-off taker of the weekend tournament.
Grubb picked up the game-winning tally with 2:38 gone by in the extra session to give the Privateers their second win of the season, Grubb finished the game with a total of three goals. The other multi-goal scorer for the Privateers was freshman
Colin McCoy (Glen Allen, Va./Greenport (N.Y.)), who collected two goals on as many shots.
Maine Maritime began the game with three straight goals through the first 15 minutes of the game. In the final minute of the opening period, Grubb picked up a extra-man goal off a pass from senior
James D'Amico (Floral Park, N.Y./St. Francis Prep.) to pull Maritime within two.
In the second quarter, Maine Maritime rattled off three straight goals to open up a 6-1 advantage and its largest lead of the game at five.
The comeback began 26 seconds after the last Maine Maritime goal, as Hayes netted an unassisted goal. Twenty-one seconds later, Grubb picked up is second of the game to trim the deficit in half at 6-3.
Senior
Andrew Scalesi (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) netted his third goal of the season in a man-up situation with 3:43 left in the half. Several possessions later Maine Maritime answered with their own man-up tally to take a 7-4 lead into the halftime break.
In the third quarter Maritime's offense began to click on all cylinders as the unit picked up all five goals scored in the quarter to take a 9-7 advantage. McCoy picked up his first of the game on an assist from classmate
Zachary Pace (Monroe Township, N.J./Monroe Township). In another man-up situation, Pace netted his team-leading 12th goal of the season. Freshman
Corey Cristallo (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park), junior
Jordan Rose (Levittown, N.Y./Holy Trinity), and McCoy picked up the game-tying and go-ahead goals in the period.
The fourth quarter offensive production was very limited as Maine Maritime outshot the Privateers by a 15-1 advantage. However, freshman goalkeeper
Kieran Clark (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) excelled in the goal with six saves in the period while only allowing two goals. With the score tied at nine, the Privateers were tasked with their second overtime period of the season.
In the extra session, Hayes collected his 12th faceoff win of the contest, with the Privateers then calling a timeout to draw up an offensive play. Grubb was able to take one shot, but it was off target and backed up by the Privateers to retain possession. Several seconds later, Grubb ripped another shot that rattled the twine to give the Privateers their second win of the season, with both coming in overtime.
In addition to his six saves in the fourth period, Clark (1-3) picked up a game total of 12 saves to pick up the first win of his career, while allowing nine goals in 61:22 on the field. The loss was saddled to Gavin Cote (0-3) after making just four saves and allowing all 10 Maritime tallies.
Defensively senior
James Quinn (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) with five caused turnovers led the Privateers, while Strezenec was second on the team with three forced turnovers. Freshman
Jack Weisheit (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) also collected two caused turnovers.
Maritime (2-5, 0-0 Skyline) will return home for a three-game homestand beginning with Lyndon State on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. with live stats of the game available at MaritimeAthletics.com. Maine Maritime (0-3, 0-0 NAC) will look to regroup off of its slow start with a matchup next Saturday against Johnson State at 12 p.m.
