THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Feb. 28, 2014) – The Maritime mixed rifle team will be competing in the Mid-Atlantic Rifle Conference Championship match on Saturday, March 1, up at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. This is the first time that the Privateers have qualified for the championships in both the smallbore and air rifle disciplines since the squad reinstated smallbore shooting last season.
Â
Maritime earned the top seed in the smallbore sharpshooter division with a 9-5 overall record and will take on the VMI women, who finished the year with an 8-6 mark and won a tie-breaker over the VMI men's team.
Â
On the air rifle side, the Privateers finished the regular season in second place in the expert division behind New York City rival John Jay College. Maritime recorded an 8-5 record, just ahead of the third-place VMI women. The Bloodhounds were just one match better than the Privateers this year and the head-to-head match, the "Big Apple Trophy", back on Dec. 7, proved to be the difference, as John Jay won by the score of 2148-2172. The Privateers will be looking for some revenge on the range on Saturday.
Â
Maritime has claimed a divisional championship at the MAC Conference Championships in three of the past five seasons. The Privateers won in air rifle in 2008 and 2010, while the smallbore team took home the sharpshooter division championship last season. This year, the squad will look to bring two titles back to Throggs Neck.
