CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (Feb. 15, 2014) – The Maritime mixed rifle team shot at the MIT Invitational this past weekend in the final match of the 2013-14 regular season. The Privateers defeated Wentworth College in an air rifle-only match, 2143-2040, on Saturday, but lost to the host Engineers in both smallbore (2162-2066) and air rifle (2258-2160) on Sunday.

On Saturday, the Privateers were led by senior Rob Depietri , who shot a team-best score of 553 in the air rifle competition. Junior Barry Potts (South Brunswick Township, N.J./South Brunswick)  was second on the squad with 537 points, while senior Allison Lashmet (DeFreestville, N.Y./Columbia) and sophomore Joe Andricola rounded out the scoring with scores of 531 and 522, respectively.

Maritime also shot in the smallbore discipline on Saturday as well in a scrimmage against MIT. The Privateers lost, 2680-2061, and also lost in air rifle, 2254-2143, in a match that had no conference ramifications. Depietri shot a team-high 529 in smallbore, while Andricola was second with a score of 520. Lashmet had a 518 and freshman Brad Boomhower shot a 494 to close out the scoring for Maritime.

On Sunday against MIT, the Privateers were led by Boomhower, who shot a 540 in smallbore. Lashmet scored a 521, Depietri registered a 510 and Andricola came in with a 495 in the three-position shooting event. On the air rifle side, junior Dan Strahan (Levittown, N.Y./Island Trees) led the squad with a 541, Potts and Lashmet tied for the second best score of 540 and Andricola recorded a 539 to round out the scoring.

The MAC regular season is now over and the Privateers have ended the year with a 9-5 record in the smallbore discipline and an 8-5 mark in air rifle. Maritime has finished in the top two in their respective divisions – first place in smallbore sharpshooter division and second place in air rifle expert division – thus earning a berth in the MAC Championships, which will be held on Saturday, March 1, up at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn.

The Privateers will take on #2 seed VMI in the smallbore sharpshooter division championship. A tie-breaker is needed to determine whether the VMI women's or VMI men's team will be taking part in the championship meet. On the air rifle side, Maritime will face a John Jay team that has become somewhat of a bitter rival for the Privateers in recent years. The Bloodhounds finished in first place in the air rifle expert division with a 9-4 record.

One event will take place before the MAC Championships, as the Privateers will take part in the NCAA Qualifiers this coming Saturday, Feb. 22. The event is hosted by Army up in West Point, N.Y. The Privateers will look to qualify as a team, or have an individual qualify, for the NCAA Championships, which are being held on March 14-15, in Murray, Ky.
