Box Score NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The historic season for the Maritime Volleyball team came to an end on Wednesday evening in the Skyline Conference Quarterfinals, as the No. 6 seed Privateers fell to the No. 3 seed Mount St. Mary Knights in four sets at the Kaplan Center.

On the match, Maritime opened up with a win in the first set by a 25-15 score. Mount St. Mary responded with three sets to end the match by the scores of 25-17, 25-18, 25-14 to advance to the Skyline Semifinals on Friday evening.

Three Privateers ended the night with 12 kills apiece as sophomore
Carly Lombardo (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville), along with freshmen
Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point)Â and
Gabrielle Kempski (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) all led the offensive attack. Lombardo and senior
Christine McCormack (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen) led the team with 16 assists each.

Defensively, senior
Sydney Carella (Greenville, N.Y./Greenville) collected 23 digs in the loss, while Kempski contributed with 16, and McCormack added 15, with Lombardo digging 11 attacks by the Knights.

Lombardo also had a pair of service aces and the lone Privateer block of the match to lead the team in those respective categories. Junior
Colleen Sheehy (Levittown, N.Y./Island Trees) picked up one dig, as did sophomore
Alyssa Esposito (Farmingdale, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) in the effort.

In the first set, Maritime fell behind by a quick 2-0 score but the Privateers stormed back with six straight points, and nine of the next 11 overall in the set to take a 9-4 lead. In the series, Kempski picked up three kills with Lombardo adding two of her own.

Mount St. Mary fought back in the set and pulled back within one at 16-15. However, the Privateers responded with nine unanswered points to finish off the set with four of the points coming from kills by Lombardo. By the end of the evening, Lombardo had 12 kills on the match to tie her career-high set back in early September against Bard.

In the second set, the Knights jumped out to a quick lead that Maritime was unable to come back from. The Privateers were able to pull within one at 11-10, and 12-11 but were unable to tie or overcome the early deficit. Both Brady, and Lombardo led Maritime in the set with three kills each.

The third set saw Mount St. Mary take a quick 1-0 lead, but Maritime came back to take an 8-5 advantage in the early stages of the set. Mount St. Mary went on an 8-1 run and never turned back as the Knights won their second straight set, this time by a 25-18 score.

Brady began the fourth set picking up three of Maritime's first four points of the set, McCormack and Kempski put down a kill each to pull the Privateers within two at 10-8. Mount St. Mary pulled away to take a 21-11 lead, and closed out the match winning four of the final seven points for a 25-14 win.

Maritime ends its record-setting season with a program-best 12 wins, the most of any women's program in the history of Maritime College, en route to the team's first-ever playoff appearance.
