Women’s Soccer Wraps up 2014 Campaign with Match vs. Farmingdale

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime Women's Soccer team ended its 2014 season with a match against the Farmingdale Rams on Monday evening, as the Privateers fell to their guests by a 10-2 score.
 
For the game, Maritime scored twice in the final 11 minutes of play as sophomores Marisa Athan (Mineola, N.Y./Mineola) and Kathleen Burns (Islip, N.Y./Islip) netted goals for the Privateers. On Burns' goal, senior Gabrielle Fox (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) and Athan picked up the assists on the corner kick goal. For Maritime, it was the first goals ever scored in the young program history against Farmingdale.
 
In goal, junior Kristen Hoar (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore East) stopped 14 shots in the opening period. Freshman Paige Frankel (Hackensack, N.J./Immaculate Conception) came on in the second half and also recorded four saves.
 
The match began with the Rams scoring five times through the first 17:40 of the match, before adding two more goals in the opening period and sending the game to halftime up by a seven-goal margin.
 
In the second half, Farmingdale added to its total with two more goals to open up a nine-goal lead.
 
In the 80th minute of play, Athan broke down the right wing and took a strong crossing shot toward the far post that made its way past the Farmingdale keeper to break the shutout. Just over a minute later, Maritime was awarded a corner kick, taken by Athan, who sent the ball into the box.
 
With a mad scramble in the center of the eight-yard box, Fox passed the ball around the goalkeeper towards the left post, where Burns sent the ball to the back of the goal to pull the Privateers back within seven.
 
Farmingdale added one more goal with just three seconds left in the game to cap off the scoring, as the Rams picked up the 10-2 win.
 
In goal, Hoar took the loss after making 14 saves and yielding seven goals. Frankel made four saves, and allowed three goals. The Maritime defense also picked up a team save.
 
Farmingdale split its time in goal, as Breanna Blair picked up the win after getting the start and did not face a shot on goal through the first 23:27 of the match. Ashley Monzillo came on next and also did not need to make a save. Third in line was Carly Vittoria, who was forced to make two saves while also giving up the two Privateer tallies, before she was pulled in favor of Monzillo to end the match.
 
Maritime finishes its 2014 season with a 5-11-1 overall record, the third highest win total for the women's soccer team in program history. On the season, freshman Julianna Avitto (Lindenhurst, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) finished 10th on the single-season goals list with six tallies this season, while Hoar finished 5th on the single-season list for saves with 151 stops in 2014. Hoar also finished in 3rd place on the single-season shutout record with four clean sheets on the year.
 
Farmingdale ends the 2014 regular season with a 12-5-3 record, and a 7-0-1 mark in Skyline play, as the team has clinched a bye into the semifinal round of the Skyline Conference Tournament.
