Records Fall as Maritime Splits Skyline Tri-Match vs. Yeshiva and Mount St. Vincent

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Senior Christine McCormack (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen) set the single-season assists mark during Maritime's tri-match opening win over the Yeshiva Maccabees, as she collected 16 in the team's three-set win over Yeshiva, 25-9, 25-12, 25-9.
 
With her 28 digs on the day between the two matches, McCormack now has 262 on the year, breaking the previous mark of 239, set by Claudette Killian in the 2011 season.
 
In the second match of the day, the Privateers fell to the Mount St. Vincent Dolphins in a five-set marathon as the match ended with the scores of 25-19, 23-25, 25-23, 10-25, and 7-15.
 
In addition to McCormack setting the single-season assist mark, classmate Sydney Carella (Greenville, N.Y./Greenville) also set the all-time digs record on Saturday afternoon as she collected 16 digs against Sarah Lawrence in the team's straight sets win over the Gryphons. Carella now has 655 career digs after Sunday, adding to the all-time record.
 
In Maritime's first match of the day against Yeshiva, the Privateers were led by freshman Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) with 13 kills, classmate Gabrielle Kempski (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) was close behind with 11, while sophomore Carly Lombardo (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) also had 10 kills on the match.
 
McCormack led the team with 16 assists, followed by Lombardo with 13. Carella added 13 digs defensively, while Lombardo added eight, with Brady and Kempski contributing with seven apiece.
 
In the first set, Maritime and Yeshiva battled early, and with the Privateers ahead by a 5-3 score they went on a 9-0 role to take control of the first set. Maritime ended the set on a 5-0 run as Brady and junior Colleen Sheehy (Levittown, N.Y./Island Trees) picked up kills to finish of the Maccabees.
 
The second set saw Maritime open up with a 15-1 run as Kempski picked up five of the team's 15 points over the series. Yeshiva attempted a comeback but Maritime ended that threat with a 6-3 rally to finish off the second by a 25-12 score. The Privateers started off strong again in the third set and did not look back to pick up the team's third conference win of the campaign.
 
The Privateers followed that up with a five-set marathon against the host Dolphins of Mount St. Vincent. Brady again led the team with 13 kills, followed by Kempski with 11. Lombardo had a double-double in the match with 15 assists and 15 digs to go along with six kills.
 
McCormack was second on the tem with 12 assists and also added eight digs. Carella led the unit with 19 digs, with Kempski adding 15 as well.
 
Maritime opened up the match with a 9-4 lead as Brady picked up three of the points on kills to start off the match. The Dolphins pulled back within one at 12-11, but the Privateers rattled off a seven-point unanswered streak as Kempski picked up a pair of service aces in the process. Kempski then ended the set with a kill from a McCormack pass.
 
The second set saw Mount St. Vincent open up an early 7-1 advantage, but the Privateers battled back with nine unanswered to take a three-point lead. Both sides exchanged the lead numerous times until the end of the set that saw the Dolphins finish off the set with four straight.
 
Maritime went on to win the third set by a 25-23 score before falling in the fourth by a 25-10 margin.
 
In the fifth set, Maritime began with a 4-2 advantage before falling behind 10-5. An attack error on the part of Mount St. Vincent gave the Privateers the service once again. The Dolphins finished off the match on a 5-1 streak to clinch the conference win.
 
Maritime (10-13, 3-5 Skyline) will next make up its league matchup against Old Westbury in the league finale on Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m. Live stats of the match will be available on MaritimeAthletics.com.
