Box Score THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime volleyball team upended the Purchase Panthers on Saturday afternoon at Riesenberg Hall Gym, the Privateers won the three sets by the scores of 25-18, 25-21, and 25-17 for the team's first conference win of the season.
The Privateers were led by freshman
Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) with 17 kills on the match. Senior
Christine McCormack (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen) collected a career-best 23 assists, while also picking up the eighth most assists in modern program history.
On defense, Maritime was led by McCormack with nine digs, followed closely by sophomore
Carly Lombardo (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) who had eight digs on the match to go along with her six kills and seven assists. Lombardo also led the team with four service aces and
In the first set, Purchase took an early 3-0 lead but Maritime was able to come back and before going on a 9-4 roll to take a 12-7 advantage as freshman
Gabrielle Kempski (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) put down the kill to cap off the run. The Privateers continued to roll in the set, taking a 20-12 lead in the process. Purchase comeback attempt was thwarted by Maritime as the Privateers finished off the set, 25-18.
The second set saw the squads battle back-and-forth as neither side was able to get larger than a five-point lead. With the Privateers leading 24-21, Brady set the ball to McCormack, who finished off the set with a kill.
Maritime took a quick 3-0 lead in the third set, looking to end the match in three, but Purchase responded with three points of its own to even up the third set of the day. After being down by a 5-4 score, the Privateers went on their longest run of the day with nine unanswered points that was highlighted by kills from Brady, and junior
Colleen Sheehy (Levittown, N.Y./Island Trees).
After picking up a point, Purchase was given the ball back to serve and collected a service error to give Maritime the straight sets victory.
The Privateers will next take on Rutgers-Newark at home on Wednesday, October 22 for a 7 p.m. start against the Scarlet Raiders.
