Box Score BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Maritime women's volleyball team picked up its seventh win of the season on Wednesday night as the Privateers knocked off the Medgar Evers Cougars in straight sets. The Privateers won by the scores of 25-20, 25-19, and 25-23 for the victory.

Maritime was led offensively by freshman
Shannon Brady (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) with 14 kills on the evening, freshmen
Carly Lombardo (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) and
Gabrielle Kempski (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) were second on the team with seven kills apiece. Lombardo also led the team with 14 sets for the match. Senior
Christine McCormack (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen) finished the night with a double-double as she collected 10 assists and a team-high 10 digs. Senior
Sydney Carella (Greenville, N.Y./Greenville) was second on the team with nine digs.

In a close first set, neither side could take more than a three-point advantage as Maritime opened up a 7-4 lead in the early going before Medgar Evers closed the gap to one at an 11-10 score. The Privateers then rattled off a 5-0 roll and took its largest lead of the set on kills from both Kempski and Lombardo, as well as three errors by the Cougars.

After Medgar Evers pulled back within four at 24-20 Lombardo picked up the kill to give Maritime its first set of the night.

The second set, saw both sides rattle off several lengthy runs as the Privateers tried to hold off the Cougars after taking an early 4-1 lead. After Medgar Evers tied the set at 13 apiece, the Privateers then scored five unanswered points to take a lead once again, which was answered back with a 6-2 swing by Medgar Evers to tie the set at 19.

The Privateers ended the set with a 6-0 advantage with kills by Brady, Lombardo, and a pair by Kempski before Brady picked up the set point with a service ace.

Maritime opened the third set with a 7-2 score with senior
Charlotte Acklin (Lewes, Del./West Broward (Fla.)) serving in the latter stages of the run. The Privateers continued to add to its advantage and took a 12-5 lead on a kill by Brady. Medgar Evers refused to go down quietly as the Cougars tied the match at 20, 21, and then again at 22 before taking a 23-22 lead over Maritime.

Not wanting to extend the match any further, Maritime finished off the set and the match with three unanswered points to seal the win.

Maritime (7-10, 0-3 Skyline) will return home for a Skyline Conference tri-match on Saturday, beginning with a matchup with Purchase at 11 a.m. followed by a 3 p.m. bout with Old Westbury. Both Old Westbury and Purchase will go head-to-head at 1 p.m. as Maritime will be hosting its annual "Dig Pink" match for breast cancer awareness month. Medgar Evers (3-21, 0-3 CUNYAC) will travel to take on Farmingdale at 7 p.m. on October 20.
