Week 6 Preview: Privateers Look to Bounce Back as Husson Eagles come to Town

The Maritime football team will play host to the Husson Eagles on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. on Reinhart Field as ECFC play continues.
 
Maritime enters off of a 7-6 loss in Newton, Mass. to the Mount Ida Mustangs, while Husson comes off of a 20-10 victory over the Norwich Cadets in Maine last Saturday.

Maritime is 2-6 in the eight head-to-head matchups against the Eagles in the history of the program. That includes loses in the last two matchups against Husson, including an overtime loss two seasons ago on Reinhart Field.
 
In last season's matchup, Maritime fell by the score of 39-17 in Bangor, Maine, the Privateers opened the game with a 14-6 advantage in the first half of the game before Husson scored 33 unanswered points en route to the victory.
 
Leaders of the Pack
With his 24 points on the season, junior placekicker Diogo Dietrich (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/DePaul Catholic) leads all ECFC kickers with his output this year. He has both attempted and converted on the most field goals in the league this year as he has made 6-of-8 kicks on the season. He is also 6-of-7 on extra point attempts in 2014.
 
His 24 points is second in the league in total, 12 points behind Chris Bettano of Anna Maria, who has 36.
 
Junior quarterback Zack Chilcott (Ulster Park, N.Y./Kingston) is averaging 96.0 rushing yards over his first four games of the season, which is also leading the ECFC by just over five-yards per game. Second on the list is Jaleel Battle of Mount Ida. Privateer senior fullback Kyle Gardner (Amityville N.Y./St. Anthony’s) is third in the league with 89.0 yards-per-game.
 
Senior Chris Klass (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) is also tied for second in the league with a pair of interceptions this year, while also leading the league with his pair of blocked kicks. Derek McAdoo of Castleton State leads the eight-team league with three picks.
 
Around the League
This week, all four teams that lost last week will be playing teams that won a week ago, Maritime will look to even its league mark with a win on Saturday against Husson.

Scouting the Privateers
Coming off of its conference-opening loss last week, Maritime now sits at 1-3 on the regular season with an 0-1 mark in ECFC action. The Privateers fell to the Mount Ida Mustangs by a 7-6 score a week ago, as all of the offense came off the right foot of junior Diogo Dietrich (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/DePaul Catholic) with a pair of field goals.

As a team the Privateers have picked up 64 first downs offensively, while opponents have collected 70 first downs against the Maritime defense. Overall the team has picked up 1,301 yard of total offense, while opponents have collected 1,271 yards through four games.

Maritime is led offensively by junior quarterback Zack Chilcott (Ulster Park, N.Y./Kingston) with 384 rushing yards with three rushing touchdowns as well. Senior running back Greg Caneparo (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) also has three touchdowns thus far on the season, to go along with 253 yards on the ground, while classmate Kyle Gardner (Amityville N.Y./St. Anthony’s) has 356 yards on the ground with one touchdown.

On the defensive side of the ball senior Hugh O'Brien (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) leads the way with 36 tackles, while classmate Nick Coffiey (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Military Academy) is two behind with 34 on the season. Linebacker Kameron Knight (Clayton, N.C./West Johnson) is third on the squad with 33 tackles. O'Brien has 2.5 sacks to lead the team, with Coffiey, Andrew Auriemma (Melville, N.Y./St. Anthony’s), Chris Shehata (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) and Eric Wallace (West Point, N.Y./James O'Neill) each having one sack on the season.

Special teams features Dietrich with six field goals converted including three that were longer than 40 yards. Freshman Matthew Murphy (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) has 18 kickoffs on the season as he averages 62.6 yards per kickoff with six touchbacks on the year. Punter John Arny (Metuchen, N.J./Metuchen) has 16 punts on the season for 602 yards and a 35.41 average, five of his punts have gone inside the 20-yard lines.

On returns, senior Chris Klass (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) has nine returns on kickoffs for 135 yards, while Caneparo has six returns for 154 yards. Sophomore Krystian Cardinal-Charles (Brooklyn, N.Y./Boys and Girls) has three returns for 47 yards. Cradinal-Charles has six punt returns for 41 yards, while Klass is second on the team with three returns for 66 yards.
 
Scouting the Eagles
Husson enters off its win over Norwich last Saturday, as the Eagles knocked off the Cadets by a 20-10 score. In the win, John Smith rushed for a pair of touchdowns, while Logan Steward also running into the end zone. Josh Gray was 2-for-3 on extra points.
 
On offense, junior quarterback Joe Seccareccia has completed 54.3% of his passes for 557 yards, while throwing for a pair of touchdowns. Ryan Stroud and Deon Wiggins have been his two primary targets as the duo have caught 30 of his 51 passes, for 373 yards and have each caught one scoring pass.

The ground features Smith and Steward, who lead the way with a combined 262 yards on the ground on 54 carries in three games. Smith has collected a pair of scoring rushes, while Steward has three under his belt this season.
 
On defense, senior defensive back is the team leader with 35 tackles through three contests thus far on the year. Second on the team is sophomore linebacker Ellis Throckmorton with 27 tackles, while also leading the team with 1.5 sacks on the year. The pair also have two of the team's five interceptions on the campaign.
 
Gray has handled the kicking duties and converted on his lone field goal attempt of the year with a 28-yarder. He is also 8-of-9 on the season on extra points. Stroud also handles the punting duties, with 18 kicks for 629 yards with six of them inside the opponent's 20-yard line.
 
In the return game, Shabashe McIntosh has six kick returns for 172 total yards including an 80-yard touchdown return. He is alto the team's primary punt returner with three returns for 27 yards.
 
Up Next
After Saturday's matchup with the Husson Eagle, Maritime heads to the road to take on the Anna Maria AMCats for a rare 3 p.m. start in Paxton, Mass. on Saturday, October 18.
 
Husson will take the long trip home with a tough test against Gallaudet at 1 p.m. on October 18.
