Despite Two Close Sets, Privateers Fall To York In Three

        THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Sept. 26, 2013) – The Maritime women's volleyball team lost to non-conference opponent York College in straight sets Thursday night at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium. The Privateers fall to 0-12 on the season, while the Cardinals improve to 2-8.
 
        For Maritime, juniors Charlotte Acklin (Lewes, Del./West Broward (Fla.)) (Lewes, Del./West Broward) and Sydney Carella (Greenville, N.Y./Greenville) (Greenville, N.Y./Greenville) both tied the match-high high with six kills each, while senior Alyssa Pourmonir (Pittston, Pa./Pittston Area ) (Pittston, Pa./Pittston Area) led all players with 15 digs to go along with five service aces. Acklin also had nine digs on her stat-line. Junior Christine McCormak (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen) recorded 14 assists and sophomore Colleen Sheehy (Levittown, N.Y./Island Trees) (Levittown, N.Y./Island Trees) put down two blocks.
 
        The first set saw the two teams play an evenly matched game. The score was tied eight separate times and the lead changed five times throughout. It was the Cardinals the pulled out the narrow 25-23 victory using a late 4-1 run to go up 24-21 before sealing the set on a Privateer service error three plays later.
 
        In the second set, Maritime built up a 15-10 lead before York was forced to call a timeout. The breather paid off for the Cardinals as the rallied back to eventually tie the score at 20-20. Play went back and forth from there and the Privateers had two chances to close out the set, but extra play was needed and a York kill and a ball handling error gave the Cards the set win, 28-26.
 
        The third set was close early before York went on a 7-3 run to take a 14-10 lead. The advantage was extended to six points twice at 18-12 and 20-14, but the Cardinals were able to maintain the lead and go on for the 25-17 set victory, taking the match, 3-0.
 
        York was led by Stayce Muirhead and Yasheka Lewis, who both had six kills. Lewis also led all players with six assists. Evelyn Florentino registered a match-high 16 assists and four players tallied a team-high three digs.
 
        Maritime will be back in action on Saturday morning, when the squad welcomes in Cross-Bronx Skyline rival Mount St. Vincent. First serve will be at 11 a.m. at Riesenberg Gym.
