THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (September 13, 2013) – The Maritime women's soccer team recorded its program-best fourth consecutive win on Friday evening as it defeated the King's (N.Y.) Lions by the score of 2-0 on Reinhart Field. Seniors Amy Hansen (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich ) and Jorrie Trenkamp (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) each picked up goals in the victory, as sophomore Kristen Hoar (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore East) notched her second shutout victory of the season with six saves.
The Privateers struck early as Hansen found the back of the net in the third minute of play after corralling a corner kick taken by sophomore Leanne Lavelle (New Windsor, N.Y./Washingtonville) to put the home team up by a 1-0 score. For Hansen, it was her first career goal, playing in her 51st career match.
Maritime continued to control much of the tempo in the opening half and into the 33rd minute of play when Trenkamp dribbled the ball down the middle of the field and took a quick shot that was initially stopped by Lions netminder Victoria McAlister. The ball came right back to Trenkamp, who then weaved around the down keeper and tapped it home for her team-leading seventh goal of the season.
Several minutes later, Trenkamp made an attempt for her second goal of the contest but it struck the top of the crossbar and continued out of play for a goal kick. Junior Jaime Rocco (Center Moriches, N.Y./ Center Moriches) also made an attempt for her first goal of the season but pushed a well placed shot just over the crossbar as the Privateer lead remained at two.
The first half ended with Maritime outshooting its guests by a 22-6 margin while corner kicks were well in favor of the Privateers at an 8-3 clip.
Maritime continued to control the majority of the play through the remainder of regulation and had several other opportunities to increase its lead to three. In the 52nd minute, Trenkamp again looking for another tally pushed a soft shot just wide of the post after breaking past the King's defense.
Freshman Marisa Athan (Mineola, N.Y./Mineola) made one last solid attempt for the Privateers in the 81st minute of play after receiving a through-ball from Trenkamp, but similar to several earlier chances, the ball was pushed just high of the crossbar.
With 1:01 left in the contest, the referees decided to end the game after a King's player was injured. The game ended with Maritime earning its fourth straight victory, by a final score of 2-0.
Earning her fourth straight win was Hoar (4-0) as she picked up six saves in 88:59 worth of action. Taking the loss was McAlister, despite making 11 saves on 32 Privateer shots.
Maritime (4-1) will need to recover and refocus quickly on tomorrow's opponent, Keystone as the Privateers travel to La Plume, Pa. for non-conference action against the Giants at 2 p.m. King's (1-2) will also be in action tomorrow afternoon when it takes on Briarcliffe at 2 p.m.
