THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (March 18, 2013) – This past Friday afternoon, the Maritime hockey team returned home from the ACHA Division III National Championship (which were held down in Springfield, Mo.) feeling a bit upset that the squad failed to win its pool and advance to the National Semifinals, but also feeling excited and extremely proud of what the program accomplished this season.
The 2012-13 season was a historic one for Maritime Hockey! The Privateers ended their campaign with a program-best 27-4 overall record, including a perfect 14-0 mark in Metropolitan Collegiate Hockey Conference action and an MCHC Championship to their name. The squad caught fire in early October and went on a 15-game winning streak that spanned nearly four months. They garnered a regional ranking in the ACHA Atlantic Region for the first time in program history, thanks in part to key regional victories over Farmingdale State, Fairfield and Southern Connecticut State.
The team qualified for the ACHA National Tournament after winning both of its games at the ACHA Regionals. At the Nationals, the Privateers were placed in a pool with Davenport University, Kennesaw State University and Marquette and the winner of the pool would move on to National Semifinals.
In the first matchup against Davenport last Tuesday, Maritime fell behind on a goal just 4:30 into the game, but tied the score at one a little over three minutes later when sophomore
Tanner McWain (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) lit the lamp on a power play off assists by classmates
Vinny Monfredo (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) and
Thomas Kirby (Rockaway Park, N.Y./Xaverian).
The Panthers would score three more goals the rest of the opening period, however, and add three more the rest of the game to claim a 7-1 victory. In goal for the Privateers, sophomore
Harris Burger (Davie, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) (Davie, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) made 35 saves in the losing effort. McWain was named the third star of the game.
Against Kennesaw State on Wednesday, Maritime scored first when senior captain
Daniel Tyx (Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville East) (Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville East) found the back of the net at 12:33. Junior
Nick Galli (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) and freshman
K.J. Paseka (Weston, Fla./Northfield-Mount Hermon) (Weston, Fla./Northfield-Mount Hermon) picked up assists on the tally.
The Owls scored the next three goals to take a 3-1 lead midway through the second period before McWain scored his second goal of the tournament off assists by junior
Paul Gubb (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) and Kriby. KSU scored shortly after to go ahead 4-2. Maritime had a goal disallowed that would've brought the game back to within one due to the puck being put in by a “distinct kicking motion” and Kennesaw State added one more goal in the third to seal their win. Burger made 23 saves in over 55 minutes of action and freshman
Connor Graham (Midlothian, Texas/Midlothian Senior) (Midlothian, Texas/Midlothian Senior) finished the game and made two saves in 4:39 of action. Tyx was named the third star of the game.
The Privateers won their last game of the season by beating Marquette 6-3 on Thursday afternoon after already being eliminated from National Semifinal contention. The first period was scoreless and the Golden Eagles would get on the scoreboard first early in the second. Grubb answered back just two minutes later to tie the game up at 1-1. Freshman
Jake Rostek (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) had a helper on the goal. Fellow freshman
Billy Kelly (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) lit the lamp on the power play off passes by Kirby and Monfredo three minutes after that to put Maritime ahead 2-1.
Both teams scored one more goal apiece late in the third, as Marquette tied the game up at 2 at 3:39, but less than a minute later Tyx scored from Paseka to help the Privateers regain the lead. In the third period, the Eagles scored just over a minute in to tie the score once again. About midway through the period, McWain scored what would turn out to be the game-winner, assisted by Kirby. Rostek added an insurance goal later in the third, assisted by senior
James McManus (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River), and Monfredo added an empty-netter to seal the victory. Burger made 35 saves to claim the win and was named the third star of the game, while McWain earned the first star of the game honor.
After the tournament was over (Adrian College – Gold won the National Championship over Univ. of Michigan-Flint, 4-1), the ACHA released the final National Rankings of the 2012-13 season and Maritime came in ranked 12th in the country. For the final rankings,
