Scoring Summary

NEWARK, N.J. (Feb. 18, 2013) – The Maritime hockey team added the cherry on top of this spectacular weekend on Monday night by capturing the 2012-13 Metropolitan Collegiate Hockey Conference (MCHC) Championship with a 6-2 victory over the County College of Morris at the AmeriHealth Pavilion at the Prudential Center in Newark.

Sophomore Vinny Monfredo (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) recorded a hat-trick for the Privateers (26-2, 14-0 MCHC), including the game-winner in the second period. Sophomore goalie Harris Burger (Davie, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) (Davie, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) recorded 21 saves to record the win.

Maritime scored first when junior Nick Galli (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) found the back of the net off a great feed from behind the net by Ross Freund (Westbury, N.Y./Chaminade) (Westbury, N.Y./Chaminade) at 13:22 of the first. The score was 1-0 after one period of play.

Midway through the second, the Privateers lit the lamp three times in the span of two minutes and 24 seconds to expand the lead to 4-0. Junior Steven Altini (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph By the Sea) made it 2-0 with a shorthanded tally after a 2-on-1 with senior Daniel Tyx (Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville East) (Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville East). Tyx made a nice move around the lone defender down low and fed Altini on a backhanded pass across the crease and Altini buried the puck past CCM goalie Vincent Zigarelli. Monfredo scored the next two goals just 1:30 apart. Morris responded with 4:39 to go in the second when Teris Wright scored an unassisted goal and the second ended with Maritime ahead, 4-1.

In the third, freshman Billy Kelly (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) scored a power play goal at 6:14 and Monfredo scored his third of the night with 2:34 remaining to cap off the hat trick. The Titans added another goal in the final minute of the game, but it wasn't enough, as the Privateers claimed the MCHC Cup.

Maritime clinched a berth in the ACHA National Tournament earlier this weekend after winning both of its regional games. The National Tournament is set to begin on Tuesday, March 12 and last until Saturday, March 16, and will be held at the Mediacom Ice Park in Springfield, Mo. The Privateers were selected to Pool C along with Davenport University, Kennesaw State University and Marquette University. More information about the tournament can be found by following this link.
