THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Dec. 9, 2013) – The Maritime hockey team played two games this past weekend, the first on Saturday night in Bryn Athyn, Pa., against Bryn Athyn College and the second at home at Chelsea Piers Connecticut on Sunday afternoon against Empire Hockey Conference opponent Southern Connecticut State. The Privateers came out victorious in both games, riding its winning streak to a season-best five games and improving their overall record to 8-3-2 (2-2-1 ECHC).
On Saturday in Pennsylvania, Maritime beat the Lions of Bryn Athyn by the score of 6-3. The Privateers led 2-0 after one period of play on goals by senior
Paul Grubb (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) and junior
Vincent Monfredo. Grubb's was assisted by Monfredo and senior
Steven Altini, while Monfredo's goal, a short-handed goal, was assisted by Altini.
The Lions scored with about nine minutes to go in the second period to cut the lead to 2-1, but Maritime responded with two goals in 33 seconds by sophomore
K.J. Paseka (Weston, Fla./Northfield-Mount Hermon) and senior
Nick Galli (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea). Galli assisted on Paseka's tally and senior
Jeff Dolan (Floral Park, N.Y./St. Mary's) had the helper on Galli's goal.
In the third period, Bryn Athyn scored two power play goals around another tally by Monfredo, assisted by junior
Vincent Pedulla (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey) and Monfredo picked up the hat trick with under a minute to go on another short-handed goal, this one unassisted, to end the scoring on the night. Junior
Harris Burger (Davie, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) earned the win in net by making 45 saves.
On Saturday at home against SoConn, the Privateers bolted out to a 3-0 lead in the first on goals by Paseka, Galli and junior
Tanner McWain (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan). The Owls responded with a goal late in the period to cut the lead to 3-1 after one. Maritime scored three more goals in the second period, one by freshman
Mark Tooma (Monroe-Woodbury, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) and two in a row by Monfredo (both short-handed just 33 seconds apart). Galli and Tooma scored Maritime's last two goals in the third period. Burger got his second win in as many days after making 28 saves in the game.
Maritime will be off for the Holiday break, returning to action on Friday, January 17, 2014, with a home game against NJIT. The puck drops at 8:30 p.m. at Chelsea Piers Connecticut in Stamford, Conn.
