Rifle Opens Season At Navy Invite Last Weekend; Air Rifle Goes 2-1, Smallbore 1-2

        ANNAPOLIS, Md. (Oct. 6, 2013) – The Maritime mixed rifle team traveled down to the U.S. Naval Academy last weekend to open the 2013-14 season at the Navy Invitational along with Akron and hosts Navy. The scores that were shot by the Privateers last Sunday were used against the scores of the Virginia Military Institute mixed, women's and men's teams.
 
        In air rifle, Maritime shot its best air gun score ever, beating the old record by 50 points. The team defeated the men's and women's teams from VMI by the scores of 2181-2120 and 2181-2151, respectively. The Privateers lost to the VMI mixed squad by the score of 2259-2181.
 
        Four shooters recorded personal bests for Maritime, led by senior Allison Lashmet (DeFreestville, N.Y./Columbia) (DeFreestville, N.Y./Columbia) with a score of 558, followed closely by junior Barry Potts (South Brunswick Township, N.J./South Brunswick) (South Brunswick Township, N.J./South Brunswick), who shot a 551. Also contributing to the scoring for the Privateers were seniors Joe Holomshek (Mount Sinai, N.Y./Mount Sinai) (Mount Sinai, N.Y./Mount Sinai), 538, and Robert Depietri (Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) (Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional), 532.
 
        In smallbore action, the Privateers lost to the VMI mixed team, 2246-2080, and also dropped its match against the VMI men by just five points, 2085-2080. Maritime did defeat the VMI women, 2080-2047, to move to 1-2 on the season. Lashmet was again the Privateers' top shooter with a score of 549, while Depietri was second on the squad with 528 points. Potts (514) and junior Kevin Owens (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) (489) rounded out the scoring for Maritime.

        The mixed rifle team will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 19, when the squad will travel down to Philadelphia, Pa., to take on the University of the Sciences mixed and women's teams.
