THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 21, 2013) – The Maritime hockey team started the 2013-14 season with an 0-1-1 weekend, losing the season-opener to Empire Collegiate Hockey Conference (ECHC) opponent Farmingdale State, 2-1, in regulation on Saturday night, and dropping a non-conference game at Fordham on Sunday, 6-5, in a shootout.
Â
On Saturday, in their new home rink of Chelsea Piers of Connecticut in Stamford, Conn., the Privateers scored first on a shorthanded goal by junior
Vinny Monfredo (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) (Shirley, N.Y. / William Floyd) with 4:29 remaining in the opening period. Junior
Tanner McWain (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) (Bridgewater, N.J. / Bridgewater-Raritan) assisted on the tally. The Privateers held the lead throughout the remainder of the first and all of the second period.
Â
The Rams broke through to tie the game at 1-1 with 12:03 to play in the third period when Jack Radin lit the lamp. Radin would add a power play goal late in the third that proved to be the difference. The Privateers racked up 22 penalty minutes on the night and were able to kill off eight of the nine Farmingdale power play opportunities, but it was ultimately the costly penalty in the third that was the difference.
Â
On Sunday at the Ice Hutch in Mount Vernon, the Privateers took on their former Met. Hockey foe Fordham University. Maritime led 2-1 after one period of play with both goals coming off the stick of senior
Ross Freund (Westbury, N.Y./Chaminade) (Westbury, N.Y. / Chaminade). Senior
Nick Galli (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) (Staten Island, N.Y. / St. Joseph By the Sea) picked up the primary assist on both goals and sophomore
Aidan McHugh (Ossining, N.Y./Cushing Academy) (Ossining, N.Y. / Cushing Academy) had the secondary assist on the first goal of the game.
Â
Monfredo scored on the power play just under three minutes into the second period (McWain and sophomore
Tommy Kirby (Rockaway Park, N.Y./Xaverian) (Rockaway Park, N.Y. / Xaverian) picked up the assists on the tally). At 15:39 of the second, Freund recorded his hat-trick goal, assisted by Galli to give Maritime a 4-1 lead. Galli scored a goal (assisted by Freund and senior
Dillon Dolansky (Monroe, N.Y./John S. Burke Catholic) (Monroe, N.Y. / John S. Burke Catholic)) in between two by Fordham and the second period ended with the Privateers ahead, 5-3.
Â
The Rams scored twice in the third and held Maritime off the scoreboard to force overtime. Neither team scored in the extra stanza, forcing a shootout. Fordham won the skills competition, taking the game by the score of 6-5 (SO).
Â
Maritime returns to action this weekend when they will play both Fordham and Farmingdale St. once again. On Saturday night, Oct. 26, the Privateers have a special night planned before their 9:30 p.m. faceoff against Fordham. The program will be celebrating their very successful 2012-13 season with a special Ring Ceremony.
