Privateers Earn First Victory Of The Season With 3-0 Sweep Of Pratt

        THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 1, 2013) – The Maritime women's volleyball team will swept visiting Pratt Institute, 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-22), on Tuesday night for the Privateers' first victory of the 2013 season. It was also first-year head coach Alice Kahrs' first victory in her collegiate coaching career. Maritime moves to 1-13 on the season, while Pratt falls to 4-6.
 
        The Privateers were excellent in passing the ball tonight, as two players recorded double-digit digs – junior Sydney Carella (Greenville, N.Y./Greenville) (Greenville, N.Y./Greenville) had 13 digs to lead all players, while senior Alyssa Pourmonir (Pittston, Pa./Pittston Area ) (Pittston, Pa./Pittston Area) picked up 12 digs. Carella also had four kills on the night.
 
        Junior Charlotte Acklin (Lewes, Del./West Broward (Fla.)) (Lewes, Del./West Broward) led Maritime with six kills and also registered eight digs. Junior transfer Christine McCormak (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen) had 12 assists and eight digs and freshman Alyssa Esposito (Farmingdale, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) (Farmingdale, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) picked up four digs. Three players all recorded one block for the Privateers: Acklin, sophomore Colleen Sheehy (Levittown, N.Y./Island Trees) (Levittown, N.Y./Island Trees) and freshman Alessandra Kahl (Westbury, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) (Westbury, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy)
 
        Maritime had an impressive .400 hitting percentage in the first set and recorded five service aces along and took advantage of four service errors by the Cannoneers. Carella had four kills in the opening set and the Privateers cruised to a 25-18 victory to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
 
        With the second score at 6-4 in favor of Pratt, Maritime went on to score eight of the next nine points to take a 12-7 lead and force the Cannoneers to call their first timeout of the set. The Privateers led by as many as eight points (19-11) before Pratt bounced back to come within three at 20-17. However, Maritime would score the next five points and take the second set.
 
        In the third and final set, the Privateers raced out to a 9-3 lead, but the Cannoneers chipped away at the lead throughout the set and eventually came within one point at 20-19. Three straight points got Maritime to 23-19 and forced Pratt to call a timeout. After three points going to the visitors, Maritime came away with the set victory after a service error and a bad set that ended play, 25-22.
 
        Two players recorded double-digit kills for the Cannoneers, seniors Melissa Au and Nicole Garcia, who both tallied 10 kills. Sophomore setter Alli Houghton led all players with 23 assists, while also picking up a team-high four digs along with junior Diana Lezama.
 
        Maritime will return to action on Thursday night, when the Privateers welcome John Jay for a 7 p.m. non-conference contest at the Riesenberg Hall Gym.
