Farmingdale St. 4 – Maritime 1

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Jan. 22, 2013) – The Maritime hockey team won both of its Metropolitan Collegiate Hockey Conference (MCHC) games this past weekend over Kings Point on Friday and the County College of Morris on Saturday, but lost the lone non-conference game on Sunday to ACHA Atlantic Region rival Farmingdale St. The Privateers saw their 15-game winning streak come to an end, but still boast a 16-2 record and remain undefeated in MCHC action with a 10-0 mark.

On Friday night, the puck dropped at around 10:15 p.m. at the Parkwood Sports Complex with Kings Point as the home team. The Mariners took a 1-0 lead late in the opening period when sophomore Kevin Berto moved around the Maritime defense and fired a shot low into the goal. The Privateers responded late in the second, as junior Paul Grubb (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) lit the lamp with 1:36 to play in the period off an assist by freshman Billy Kelly (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) and the score was tied after two periods.

Junior Nick Galli (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph By the Sea) gave Maritime the lead just 1:43 into the third period when he corralled the puck after a defensive mishap and fired a backhander from the top of the slot past KP goalie Joe Davenport. Sophomore Vinny Monfredo (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) added an insurance goal shortly after off assists by Kelly and classmate Tanner McWain (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) (Bridgewater, N.J. / Bridgewater-Raritan). In net, sophomore Harris Burger (Davie, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) (Davie, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) recorded 19 saves to earn the “W” in the 3-1 victory.

On Saturday, the Privateers hosted the 2011-12 MCHC Champions, C.C.M., at Parkwood and came out on top by the score of 4-1. Maritime had two tallies by Monfredo, one by McWain and another by junior Dillon Dolansky (Monroe, N.Y./John S. Burke Catholic) (Monroe, N.Y./ Burke Catholic). McWain also added an assist and freshman Louis Eiler (Merrick, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) chipped in with two helpers. Burger made 10 saves between the pipes for the win.

Sunday was a key regional match-up against Farmingdale State on the road, as the Privateers are vying for an opportunity to play in the ACHA Atlantic Regional Tournament for a shot to compete in the Nationals. Maritime is currently the #8-seed in the region, while the Rams are ranked #2, but the Privateers won the previous meeting, 3-2, in overtime back in December. It was Farmingdale that would earn the victory this time, however.

Maritime scored first late in the opening period when freshman Kelly Paseka (Weston, Fla./Northfield-Mount Hermon) found the back of the net off a pass by Galli. Farmingdale would respond right away, though, with two goals and take a 2-1 lead into the break. After two periods of play, the Rams' lead grew to 3-1 and another tally in the third closed out the scoring at 4-1. Burger made 22 saves in the losing effort.

The Privateers are back at it this weekend, when they will play Southern Connecticut State on Friday night at 9 p.m. at the Wonderland of Ice in Bridgeport, Conn., before squaring off against conference opponent Stevens at home at Parkwood on Saturday night at 9:15 p.m. On Sunday, the team will travel to Shelton, Conn., to take on Fairfield University at the Sports Center of Connecticut at 8 p.m.
