NEWBURGH, N.Y. (Jan. 19, 2013) – The Maritime basketball team had four players scored in double-digits, but the Privateers fell to Skyline opponent Mount St. Mary, 75-64, Saturday afternoon at the Knights' Kaplan Center. Maritime's record drops to 1-11 (0-7 Skyline) on the season, while MSM improves to 9-6 (6-3 Skyline).
"We proved today we can play with anybody in our league,” said head coach
Jake Scott. “We just need to put together a full 40 minutes of basketball. We're looking forward to practice and three more games next week.”
The first three and a half minutes wound up being the difference in the game, as the Knights stormed out of the gate to grab a 14-0 lead. The advantage remained in double-figures for the rest of the first half, as Mount St. Mary shot 51.7-percent (15-for-29) to the Privateers' 34.5 (10-for-29) and took a 41-27 lead into the halftime break.
Maritime fought back to within eight points, 41-33, by scoring the first six points of the second half, all by way of senior
Ron Bethea (Harlem, N.Y./Humanities Prep.) (Harlem, N.Y./Humanities Prep.). At four separate times later in the half, the Privateers got within nine points, but were unable to go on the run they needed to get back into the game.
Bethea finished with a team-high 20 points, while also bringing down six rebounds. Freshman
Kevin Blohm (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) added 14 points, sophomore
Sean Corley (Harlem, N.Y./Thurgood Marshall Academy) (Harlem, N.Y./Thurgood Marshall) chipped in with 11 points and a game-high seven rebounds and freshman
Tim McNamara (Somerville, N.J./Somerville) (Somerville, N.J./Somerville) contributed 10 to round out the double-figure scorers.
Mount St. Mary junior Joe Stabach led all players with 22 points, while classmate Chris Pisciotta had 11 points and junior Joe Henain scored 10 and matched the game-high with seven rebounds.
Maritime returns to action this Tuesday night, Jan. 22, when the team will play host to Skyline opponent Mount St. Vincent. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium.
