CASTLETON, Vt. (Sept. 22, 2012) – The Maritime football team lost its Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) opener Saturday afternoon up at Castleton St. College in Vermont by the score of 35-16. The Privateers fall to 1-2 on the season (0-1 ECFC) in defeat, while the Spartans improve to 2-2 (1-0 ECFC).
“Give a lot of credit to the Spartans and particularly their fine quarterback, Shane Brozowski,” commented Maritime head coach
Clayton Kendrick-Holmes. “We had too many missed opportunities in the red zone, penalties and turnovers that affected the outcome. It's time to regroup and get better this week. There is a lot of football left in the season.”
For the second straight week, Maritime scored the first touchdown of the game, this time on a 15-yard rush by senior
Joe Guerra (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) to cap off the game's opening drive at 10:36 of the first quarter. Castleton responded on the very next drive, however, as Brozowski hooked up with senior Tyler Carpenter on a 14-yard TD pass. The Spartans would miss the extra point, leaving the Privateers in the lead, 7-6.
Castleton found the end zone again later in the first quarter, when Brozowski found his primary wideout, junior Brandon Boyle, for a 29-yard touchdown pass and then took a 14-7 lead when Brozowski ran in the two-point conversion. Maritime would fumble on its first play of the next drive and the Spartans recovered at the Privateers' 45-yard line. Six plays later, Carpenter ran in a four-yard TD and the extra point by senior Dave Fox put Castleton ahead by two touchdowns, 21-7.
After a long drive downfield brought Maritime to first-and-goal at the Spartans' nine-yard line, the Castleton defense was able to keep the Privateers out of the end zone, ending the drive with a goal-line stand at the one-yard line. However, it was Maritime that would benefit from the field position that the Spartans took over at, because after a three-and-out, Castleton was forced into a punt situation. The snap was high over the punter and went out of bounds to give the Privateers a safety, making the score 21-9.
Maritime got into the red zone again on the ensuing drive, but was unable to score after another goal-line stand by the Spartans. The first half ended with Castleton ahead, 21-9.
Castleton took a 28-9 lead on its first drive of the second half, when Carpenter ran in a one-yard TD for his third score of the day, capping off a 10-play, 65-yard drive. Then, on their next possession, the Spartans grabbed a commanding 35-9 lead when Carpenter rushed again, this time from five yards out.
The Privateers answered early in the fourth quarter, when junior QB
Tyler Trodden (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) jumped over the goal line from two yards out and kicker
Diogo Dietrich (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/DePaul Catholic) (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/DePaul Catholic) nailed his second PAT of the game to make the score 35-16. Neither team reached the red zone for the remainder of the fourth quarter and the Spartans went into victory formation late in the game to ice the victory.
For Maritime, Trodden led the team with 118 rushing yards and was also 7-for-14 on completions for 49 yards. Senior
Fritz Jean (Palm Coast, Fla./Palm Coast (Fla.)) (Palm Coast, Fla./Palm Coast) led all receivers with 27 yards on two catches. Sophomore fullback

Hugh O'Brien (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) tallied eight tackles, including one for a loss of two yards, and a quarterback hurry.
Brozowski ended the game 30-for-47 for 349 yards and one passing TD for Castleton. He surpassed the New England Division III Football career passing yards record in the victory. Carpenter had four touchdowns, one in the air after hauling in 65 yards on eight catches and three on the ground after compiling a total of 69 rushing yards. Sophomore Kevin Alberque led all receivers with 111 yards on nine catches. On defense, senior Brandon Bergeron led the Spartans with 11 tackles and also recorded an interception.
