GREAT NECK, N.Y. (Dec. 1, 2012) – The #8-regionally ranked Maritime hockey team hosted #11 Fairfield University on Saturday night at the Parkwood Sports Complex in an important mid-season showdown and defeated the visiting Stags in a shootout, 4-3. The Privateers improve to 12-1 overall on the season, pushing their winning streak to 11 straight games.
Maritime jumped out to a 3-0 lead with two late goals in the first period by sophomore
Vinny Monfredo (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) and an early second period goal by senior captain
Daniel Tyx (Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville East) (Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville East). Sophomore goalie
Harris Burger (Davie, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) (Davie, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) assisted on Monfredo's first goal, which was a shorthanded goal. The second tally was on the power play, assisted by junior
Paul Grubb (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) and freshman
Billy Kelly (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook). Tyx's goal just 1:05 into the second period was at even strength and was assisted by sophomore
Vincent Pedulla (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey) (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey).
Fairfield fought right back, however, with two quick goals right after Tyx lit the lamp by Peter Lanigan and Colin Norton. The Stags tied the game midway through the third period on a power play goal by Patrick Breed and regulation would end with the teams knotted up at 3-apice.
Maritime took two penalties within 16 seconds of each other in the five-minute overtime period, but Fairfield was unable to find the game-winner on the 5-on-3 and eventually lost the two-man advantage when they were whistled for a bench minor just over a minute in. The Privateers then had a power play, but were also unable to light the lamp. Neither team would secure the win in overtime, so they went to a three-round shootout to determine the winner.
Burger made two stops in the first two rounds and the Privateers scored on their second try when sophomore
Tanner McWain (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) beat the Stags' Brian O'Loughlin. In the third round, Burger stoned the third-straight Fairfield shooter to give Maritime the victory. He ended the night with 44 saves, while his counterpart, O'Loughlin, made 38.
Up next, the Privateers will remain out-of-conference for the next game, as they will host the #2-regionally ranked team in the Atlantic, Farmingdale State, on Friday night, Dec. 7, at 10:15 p.m. at Parkwood. Maritime will then take on MCHC-opponent Stevens on the road on Sunday at 9 p.m. at the AmeriHealth Pavilion at The Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.
The game that was originally scheduled for Saturday night, Dec. 8, at Farmingdale State has been postponed. No make-up date has been announced as of yet.
