THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 23, 2012) – The Maritime rifle team opened the 2012-13 season this past weekend with a trip down to the City of Brotherly Love to take on the University of the Sciences-Philadelphia. The Privateers competed against both the USP-Mixed and the USP-Women's team and finished the day with a split.
Maritime competed in the Smallbore event for the first time under second-year head coach
Tom White. In that event, sophomore
Ed Green (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) led the way with a score of 515. As a team, the Privateers finished with 1993 points in Smallbore. In the Air Rifle event, sophomore
Allison Lashmet (DeFreestville, N.Y./Columbia) (DeFreestville, N.Y./Columbia) shot a team-best 548 points to lead Maritime to an overall score of 2122.
The scores from both events, combined, totaled 4115 points, which was enough to defeat the USP-Women's squad (3940), but fell short of the Devils' Mixed team (4276). The Privateers' score from this event will also count towards Postal Matches against Indiana University of Pennsylvania and Princeton.
The Maritime rifle team will return to action in two weeks, on Saturday, Nov. 10, when the squad will travel to Cambridge, Mass., to take on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The Privateers will also be competing against the Wentworth Institute Mixed and Women's squads and will have their score count in a postal against Loyola University.
