PAXTON, MASS. (Oct. 13, 2012) – The Maritime football team pulled away from Anna Maria College late in the third quarter to defeat its conference opponent, 42-21, on Saturday at AMCAT field up in Massachusetts. The win moves the Privateers to an even 3-3 (2-1 ECFC) on the season, while AMC falls to 1-5 (0-4 ECFC).
“I'm really proud of the team and how they responded well after a tough first half,” said head coach
Clayton Kendrick-Holmes. “We had a number of bad penalties and had two touchdowns called back, but they really got back on track in the second half. We were happy to see the defense get a touchdown, also.”
Junior quarterback
Tyler Trodden (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) scored the first two touchdowns of the day in the first quarter with eight- and six-yard runs and freshman
Diogo Dietrich (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/DePaul Catholic) (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/DePaul Catholic) nailed both PATs to give the Privateers an early 14-0 lead. The AMCATs responded at 11:26 of the second quarter to make it 14-7 when senior quarterback Santino Simone ran in a 31-yard TD. That drive was nearly cut short when Anna Maria had to punt the ball away after three plays and the Privateers ran the punt back for a touchdown, but Maritime was whistled for roughing the kicker and the AMCATs retained possession.
The Privateers did find the end zone again, however, at 4:47 of the second quarter on four-yard run by junior
Gary Bigham (Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles (Fla.)) (Jacksonville, Fla. /The Bolles), but Anna Maria had a late score by junior running back Robert Small on a three-yard run. The teams went into the locker rooms for halftime with Maritime ahead, 21-14.
In the second half, Small ran in a one-yard TD and the PAT tied the game at 21-21 less than four minutes into play. The Privateers responded at 5:55 of the third when junior
Andrew LaLonde (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) found the end zone on a five yard run. Then, on the ensuing Anna Maria possession, sophomore
Duke Alvora (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) intercepted a pass and returned it 19 yards for the touchdown. It was Maritime's first defensive TD of the season. Bigham added a four-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter to close out the scoring on the day.
Trodden ended the game with a team-high 58 yards on the ground with two rushing TDs, while Bigham also had two scores after 47 yards. Trodden was 9-for-17 on completions for 154 yards and senior
