Volleyball Rallies Back To Defeat Yeshiva, 3-2, For First Win Of Season

        THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 11, 2012) – The Maritime women's volleyball team defeated Skyline Conference-for Yeshiva University, 3-2, Thursday night at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium. The scores of the sets were 25-21, 24-26, 23-25, 25-17 and 15-13. The Privateers move to 1-15 (1-3 Skyline) on the season, while the Maccabees fall to 2-5 (0-4 Skyline).
 
        Sophomore Sydney Carella (Greenville, N.Y./Greenville) (Greenville, N.Y./Greenville) recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 11 digs and was one service ace away from a triple-double. Classmate Tessa Jardine (Valley Stream, N.Y./Waterford) (Valley Stream, N.Y./Waterford) was second on the squad with eight kills, while junior Alyssa Pourmonir (Pittston, Pa./Pittston Area ) (Pittston, Pa./Pittston) picked up a team-high 13 digs. Senior Jerrica Romero (Bronx, N.Y./Herbert H Lehman) (Bronx, N.Y./Lehman) led all players with 23 assists.
 
        The Privateers had to rally from down 2-1 after the third set and won the fourth set with the widest margin of the night, 25-17. In the decisive fifth and final set, Maritime took a 12-9 lead, but squandered it to see Yeshiva battle back and tie the set at 13-13. Head coach Liz Praetorius called a timeout to settle the team down and the Privateers responded with two straight points on Yeshiva attack errors.
 
        The Maccabees were led by senior Moriah Green, who tallied eight kills, 12 assists and eight digs. Junior Shira Genauer led all players with 18 digs.
 
        Maritime is back in action on Monday night, Oct. 15, when the squad will travel up to Purchase to take on the Panthers. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
