THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Jan. 25, 2012) – Following the success of last season's
Brothers Blog, the Maritime men's lacrosse team will be right back at it this year, offering a inside look at the team from a player's perspective with the all new
Southern Swag Blog: Featuring Wess Johnson (Elgin, S.C./Heath Wood Hall).
A native of Elgin, S.C., Johnson will begin his second season at attack for the Privateers in 2012. During his freshman year in 2011, he saw action in nine games, registering two goals and two assists. He scored his first career goal at home against Plattsburgh State on March 12. Johnson helped Maritime to a 7-9 overall record and a semifinal appearance in the Skyline Conference Tournament.
Wess will be checking in with
MaritimeAthletics.com throughout the preseason and regular season with blog updates twice a week that will give followers an inside look of what's going on in his life both on and off the field.
In my home state of South Carolina, lacrosse is a
SPRING sport. There is never ice on the field or a grey, wintery sky. Even with this week's cold rain and snow on the field, I felt at home. Returning to the practice field with the familiar faces of teammates, committed coaches and compliments from Theo (Greene) on my stick skills – I was on home turf.
All kidding aside, I hope everyone had a relaxing break and is ready for a great Maritime lacrosse season. I am a sophomore this year and will be sending regular blogs to share a personal note about experiences from the team.
Our first practice started with a new drill which definitely sets the tempo for this year – fast-paced and rough. We were placed into groups, each having three players. While standing in a line the third person would roll out the ball, while the first would run out to scoop the ground ball. While the first was going to scoop the GB, the second acted as a chaser. The third player, who initially rolled, was the outlet. All would rotate. This drill continued for 10 minutes - a lung-burner for a first practice drill. For the remainder of the practice we worked on fundamentals, which are also crucial at the start of the season.
We will face new teams on this year's schedule and expect challenges from returning conference teams, but with the experience of upperclassmen such as
John Driscoll (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) and
Steve Tonn, we should be in good shape. Watch out for recruits
Charlie Kuhn and
Justin Fronckwicz (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville), whom are great additions to our attack and defense lines.
GO MARITIME!
