THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Jan. 23, 2012) – The Maritime hockey team showcased poise and resiliency this weekend, as they blew the Stevens Ducks out of the pond by a score of 9-3 on Friday in New Jersey, and then went on to defeat arch-rival Kings Point on Saturday in Great Neck. The Privateers record improves to 11-8-1 on the season (11-4-0).
Freshman goaltender
Harris Burger (Davie, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) (Davie, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) did more than just stop pucks Friday night, as he got involved in the offense by headmaning the puck up-ice with a bulls-eye two-line pass to
Dan Tyx (Amherst, N.Y./ Williamsville East), who then softly tipped it ahead for speedy sophomore
Ross Freund (Westbury, N.Y./Chaminade) (Westbury, N.Y./Chaminade). Freund joined the rush and barreled into the zone like cookies falling out of a jar, undressing both the defenseman and the goaltender to give the Privateers a 1-0 lead on a power-play just a little over five minutes into the game.
Freshman forward
Tanner McWain (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) got his first of three tallies, again on a power-play with just 19 seconds remaining in the opening period to give the Privateers a solid 2-0 lead heading into the intermission. Assisting on the goal were forwards
Jesse Wynn (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund's Prep) (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund's Prep) and
Vincent Monfredo (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd).
The score sheet was full of ink for the second period as both teams totaled seven goals, with the Privateers accounting for four of them. Sophomore
Dillon Dolansky (Monroe, N.Y./John S. Burke Catholic) (Monroe, N.Y./John S. Burke Catholic) was credited with the game-winning-goal, which also came on the power-play in the second period. Maritime was clutch with the extra-man advantage on Friday, as they scored three goals on six power-play chances.
Burger was once again solid in net as he stopped 37 of 40 shots. The line of McWain, Wynn, and Monfredo was dominant as they combined for nine points on the night.
The Privateers got as much rest as they could before getting back in the saddle for an emotional game against the Kings Point Mariners at the Parkwood Ice Rink on Saturday. After a scoreless first period, Freund gave the road warriors the early second period lead, taking advantage of a carry-over penalty taken by Robert McRobbie late in the first. However, it didn't take KP very long to respond as Dave Lew tied it a minute later. Monfredo's go-ahead goal came mid-way through the second period, also on a Privateer power-play. The teams went into the second intermission deadlocked at two, setting up for an entertaining final stanza.
With just a little under 10 minutes to go in regulation, junior defenseman
James Mcmanus (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River), anchoring at 6-2, broke the tie to give the Privateers the lead. Assisting on the goal were sophomore forwards
Nick Galli (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph By the Sea) and
Josh Hempel (Katy, Texas/Cinco Ranch) (Katy, Texas/Cinco Ranch). McWain gave the Privateer bench a sigh of relief as he got the insurance marker late in the third, taking away any chance for the Mariners to deploy any late-game heroics. Burger put his stamp on the victory, as he got involved in the offense once again, assisting on an empty-netter by
Frank Castelli (Little Neck, N.Y./St. Francis Prep.) (Little Neck, N.Y./St. Francis Prep.). Burger finished with 18 saves and one assist on the night.
Maritime hockey returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 28, against Raritan in Bridgewater, N.J., at 9:25 p.m.
