THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Jan. 18, 2012) – The Maritime hockey team dropped both of its home games this weekend, losing 6-2 to C.C.M. on Saturday night and 4-2 to NJIT on Sunday. With the losses, Maritime remains one game above .500 with a record of 9-8-1.

On Saturday at Parkwood, down 2-0, sophomore defenseman Steven Vietri (Bronx, N.Y./Fortress Christian Academy) cut the deficit in half with a goal in the second period and senior forward Greg Dolan (Floral Park, N.Y./St. Mary's) (Floral Park, N.Y./St. Mary's) knotted it at two just thirty-three seconds into the third period. But just as things started to look promising for the Privateers, Mark Zavorin scored the go-ahead goal and put the nail in the coffin with a power-play goal to regain the two-goal lead for C.C.M. who never looked back, winning by a final score of 6-2. Freshman goaltender Harris Burger (Davie, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) (Davie, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) had a lot of work between the pipes as he faced 32 shots in the loss.

On Sunday against non-conference opponent NJIT in Flushing, sophomores Nick Galli (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph By the Sea) and Ross Freund (Westbury, N.Y./Chaminade) (Westbury, N.Y./Chaminade) registered the two Privateers' goals in the losing effort, while Greg Dolan (Floral Park, N.Y./St. Mary's) got on the board with two helpers. Berger was peppered again with 31 shots on the night, while allowing four goals.

The Privateers look to get back in the winning column as they return to action this weekend with two back-to-back road games on Friday night, Jan. 20, against Stevens at the AmeriHealth Pavilion next door to the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. at 8:30 p.m., and Saturday night against cross-river rival Kings Point in Great Neck, N.Y at 9:15 p.m. at the Parkwood Ice Complex.

Inside The Series
Since the two teams began facing each other during the 2009-10 season, the Privateers lead the series three games to one against the New Jersey-based Stevens Ducks. Maritime took both games last season as they won a tight nail-biter just a few steps from “The Rock” in New Jersey and then a had dominant performance at home, sending the Ducks back with a long bus ride to the Garden State after a 15-3 debacle. Then-freshman Dillon Dolansky (Monroe, N.Y./John S. Burke Catholic) (Monroe, N.Y./John S. Burke Catholic) got the Privateers on the board with two early goals while Greg Dolan (Floral Park, N.Y./St. Mary's) and then-sophomore James McManus (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) each scored a goal and three assists.

The rivalry between Maritime and Kings Point has been carried onto the ice since Kings Point joined the Met Hockey Conference last season. The Privateers soundly took both games by significantly large margins. Galli scored a hat-trick in a 9-1 victory at home, while McManus tallied two goals on the road to help the Privateers earn an 11-2 blowout victory in front of a surprisingly large and loud Maritime crowd. Greg Dolan (Floral Park, N.Y./St. Mary's) and then-junior Dylan Tyx (Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville East) both scored on breakaways in the second period with the former coming while shorthanded and the latter coming on a power-play. Goalie Zach Dietrich (Point Pleasant, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) was credited with the victory, allowing just one goal on 14 shots before being replaced in the third.
