McSloy’s Game-High 27 Points Not Enough As Privateers Lose At Sage

ALBANY, N.Y. (Jan. 17, 2012) – The Maritime men's basketball travelled up to the state's capital Tuesday night for a conference tilt against The Sage Colleges at the Gators' Kahl Center. It was the home team that came away with the 79-63 victory despite a game-high 27 points by Privateers' senior Mike McSloy (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park).
 
The loss drops Maritime to 2-13 on the season (2-6 Skyline), while Sage improves to 7-7 (3-5 Skyline).
 
McSloy tallied 14 of his 27 points in the opening half. The Privateers took its only lead of the game in the opening minutes of the opening stanza, when sophomore Jack Cole (Bethany Beach, Del./Indian River) (Bethany Beach, Del./Indian River) scored the first basket of the game just over a minute in. From then on, the Gators took over control and never looked back, as their lead grew to as much as 16 points in the first half, 33-17, with 3:51 to go.
 
Maritime cut the lead down to six points twice early in the second half, first on a free throw by junior Hugh Byrd (Pequannock, N.J./DePaul Catholic) (Newfoundland, N.J./DePaul Catholic) and later on a jumper by Byrd that made the score 43-37 in favor of Sage at 16:15. However, that was the closest the Privateers would come, as the Gators kept growing their lead to earn the victory.
 
Byrd ended the night with eight points, as did freshman Tyler Brown (New York, N.Y./Humanities Prep.) (New York, N.Y./Humanities Prep.). McSloy brought down seven rebounds to lead the Privateers.
 
Sage was led by sophomore Mason Horne, who had a team-high 20 points. Four other players scored in double-digits for the Gators. Freshman Michael Gallagher nearly recorded a double-double with 14 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
 
Maritime returns to action on Thursday night, Jan. 19, when the squad plays host to the Farmingdale State Rams. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium.
