THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Sept. 6, 2011) – The Maritime women's soccer team played to a 3-3 draw against Keystone College Tuesday night at Reinhart Field in the Privateers' first home game of the season. The contest had torrential rain storms at various times throughout. The tie brings Maritime to 1-2-1 overall on the season, while the Lady Giants move to 1-0-1.
The game was slow at first, but the Privateers got on the board in the opening half when junior Jorrie Trenkamp (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) found the back of the net in the 20th minute after corralling the ball around the goalkeeper, who came out to play a nice through ball in by junior Liz Dragomir (Rye Brook, N.Y./School of the Holy Child) (Rye Brook, N.Y./School of the Holy Child) but fumbled the ball to Trenkamp. Maritime outshot Keystone 4-2 in the half.
In the second half, Trenkamp scored again to make it 2-0 after a direct kick by freshman Gabrielle Fox (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) found her open in front in the 51st minute. The Giants answered right back, however, to cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 53rd minute when sophomore Samantha Littleford dribbled the ball around the goal box and fired a shot into the top left corner.
Then Keystone would score two quick goals in the 71st and 73rd minutes to take a 3-2 lead, as sophomore Shelby Richards and freshman Alysa Borick both scored, the first off a free kick and the second on a breakaway. The two goals were both assisted by Littleford. Just over four minutes later, the Privateers would get the equalizer, when Trenkamp fought off the defender in the goal box and saw the ball hit off the right cross bar and right to a wide open Dragomir, who fired it home for her first career goal. Just before regulation ended, the Giants nearly scored the game winner, but a misplayed ball down low just hit off the right post and the squads went to a golden goal overtime.
Keystone had the only shot in the first overtime, but it was not on net. Neither team really threatened throughout the first 10. In the second overtime, the Giants came close to winning, but two shots on goal were turned away by junior Courtney Marietta (Grantville, Pa./Lower Dauphin) (Grantville, Pa./Lower Dauphin). The game ended in a 3-3 draw.
In goal, Marietta made three saves, while her counterpart on Keystone, sophomore Rebecca Dinelli, also finished the night with three assists.
The Privateers return to action on Friday, Sept. 9, when they play host to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. First kick is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
