Football Week 5 Preview: Privateers Host Castleton State In ECFC-Opener Saturday At 1 p.m.

        THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Sept. 30, 2011) – The Maritime football team (2-1, 0-0 ECFC) returns to action Saturday afternoon when the squad plays host to ECFC-foe Castleton State (1-2, 1-0 ECFC) at 1 p.m. at Reinhart Field. The contest will be the first conference game for the Privateers this 2011 season, as they will begin the quest to repeat as ECFC Champions.

Maritime Coaches To Take Part In Coach To Cure MD

        Week Four was the national Coach To Cure MD week, but because of Maritime's bye week, the Privateer football coaching staff will be taking part in the program in Week Five. Each Maritime coach will be wearing “Coach to Cure MD” patches during the game on Saturday to support the effort of the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA). The program is in support of the fight against Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, the most prolific genetic killer diagnosed in childhood.

Bronx PeeWee Warriors To Play Game At Reinhart Field Prior To Privateers
Prior to the collegiate action on Saturday, the Bronx Warriors PeeWee Football League will be holding a contest on Reinhart Field between the Ramblers and the Spartans. The game will begin at 9 a.m. Come early to cheer on the local grassroots pee wee football organization in the Bronx! Participants and their families will be staying to enjoy the action between Maritime and Castleton State later in the day.
 
Privateers Hold The Edge In The Series Against Castleton

        In the previous two years that Maritime and the Spartans have met, the Privateers have come out on top both contests. In the first meeting during the 2009 season, Maritime topped Castleton, 58-20, at home in Week Six.
 

        In last year's Week Six battle up in Vermont, the Privateers came out victorious, 41-28. Then-junior Jamie Spanopoulos (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) led the rushing game with 162 yards, but then-sophomore quarterback Joe Dickey (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North (N.J.)) (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) had his hand in four touchdowns, rushing for two and passing for two. On the defensive side, then-sophomore linebacker Keith Barnes (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) led all players with 13 total tackles (six solo and seven assisted), while Steve Roman (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph's by the Sea) (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph's by the Sea) recorded six solo and two assisted tackles for eight total.
 
Privateers Honored Four Times With ECFC Player Of The Week Accolades Thus Far

        Four members of the Maritime football team have been awarded weekly honors by the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference so far this year, which is a conference high. After the Week Two win over Western Connecticut, seniors Jamie Spanopoulos (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) and Madison Leary (Tavares, Fla./Tavares) (Tavares, Fla./Tavares) earned Offensive and Special Teams Player of the Week accolades, respectively. Sophomore Tyler Trodden (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) (Putnam Valley, N.Y./JFK Catholic) and junior Thomas Boney (Jacksonville, Fla./University Christian (Fla.)) (Jacksonville, Fla./University Christian)  earned offensive and defensive awards, respectively, after the Week Three win over Kings Point.
 
Team Comparison Of National Rankings

        The Privateers rank number 15 among all DIII programs in Total Defense, allowing opponents just 231.33 yards per game, while the Castleton State Spartans' Total Offense is currently 56th in the country with 413.33 yards per game. Maritime's pass defense is ninth in the NCAA, allowing just 102.33 pass yards per game. Castleton's red zone offense is 26th in the country, scoring on 10 of 11 opportunities inside the 20 (91-percent), while the Privateers' red zone defense is 41st, allowing just six scores on 10 opponents' chances (60-percent).
 

        On the offensive side, the Privateers rank 193 in the country in Total Offense with 277.33 yards per game and Castleton's defense ranks 229th, allowing an average of 497.33 yards per game. The Maritime red zone offense is tied for 92nd with eight scores on 10 tries (80-percent), while the Spartans red zone defense has allowed 15 scores on 18 tries (83-percent), which ranks the team 162nd.
 

        The turnover margin for Maritime ranks 64th (0.67), while Castleton is 218th (-1.67). The two teams' net punt rankings are very close – the Privateers hold the edge at 61st with 34.17 yards per kick, while the Spartans are 63rd with 34.00 yards per kick.
 
Scouting The Castleton State Spartans

        In 2010, Castleton State went 5-4 overall, including a 5-2 mark in ECFC action, which tied for second in the conference with Norwich. This season, the Spartans have a new head coach, Marc Klatt, and the team returns 61 letterwinners from last season, including 18 starters.
 

        Thus far in 2011, junior quarterback Shane Brozowski has led the offense, going 49-for-74 in completions for 593 yards, with nine touchdowns and four interceptions. His top receiver has been sophomore Brandon Boyle with 24 catches for 351 yards and four TDs. On the ground, junior Tyler Carpenter has led the way with 254 rushing yards, while scoring twice.
 

        On the defensive side, junior linebacker Josh Osborne leads the squad with 36 tackles (18 solo and 18 assisted), while classmate Dustin Young ranks second with 32 tackles (11 solo and 21 assisted).
 

        Special teams has seen senior placekicker Luis Robitaille make 13-of-14 PATs, while not attempting one field goal yet this season. The punter this year is freshman Stew Quinn, who has averaged 37.7 yards on seven punts so far, while freshman Nate Swahn has gotten most of the kickoffs and has averaged 52.2 yards over 13 kicks.
