THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Sept. 26, 2011) – The Maritime volleyball team lost its two conference matches this past weekend against Old Westbury and Farmingdale State at Purchase College on Saturday. The losses drop the Privateers to 4-6 overall (1-2 Skyline), while the Panthers improve to 10-4 (4-1 Skyline) and the Rams move to 8-2 (3-0 Skyline).
In the two sets, Maritime was led by junior Jerrica Romero (Bronx, N.Y./Herbert H Lehman) (Bronx, N.Y./Lehman), who tallied a team-high 11 kills and 20 digs. Classmate Claudette Killian (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Lima Christian School) (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Lima Christian School) registered 19 assists.
Old Westbury won the first match of the day in straight sets, holding off the Privateers in the first set, 25-21, before taking the second and third 25-14 and 25-12. Farmingdale also won in three, 25-15, 25-11 and 25-10.
The Panthers were led by senior Ashley Greene, who had 12 kills, while classmate Kristina Giordano tallied 21 assists. Rams senior Dominique Cunningham recorded a team-high nine kills with eight digs, while senior Jessica Zimmermann registered 11 digs. Sarah Palladino had lent a hand with 19 assists.
Maritime will return to action on Saturday, when they travel a little ways up Interstate-95 to take on local-rival New Rochelle this Saturday, Oct. 1. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
