NEWARK, N.J. (Sept. 24, 2011) – The Maritime hockey team opened the 2011-12 season Friday night on the road at ACHA D-II opponent NJIT in New Jersey. Despite an early 2-0 lead, the Privateers fell to the Highlanders by the final score of 8-6.
Sophomore Nick Galli (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph By the Sea) got the scoring started under 10 minutes into the game when he banged home a rebound of a shot by senior Daniel Tyx (Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville East) (Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville East). Junior James McManus (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) also picked up an assist on the goal. Junior Sean Dougherty (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) scored the second goal of the game after a beautiful pass by senior Dylan O'Malley-Joyce (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) (Cranford, N.J./Cranford). Sophomore Steven Altini (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph By the Sea) also had an assist on that goal.
NJIT would tie the game before the end of the first, however, on goals by sophomore Jason Anagnos and freshman Nick Gradkowski. In the second period, Maritime went ahead again on a goal by grad. student Kevin Ihde (Brick, N.J./Marist) (Brick, N.J./Marist) off a rebound of a shot by sophomore Josh Hempel (Katy, Texas/Cinco Ranch) (Katy, Texas/Cinco Ranch). The Highlanders would score the next three goals, with the second and third coming just 10 seconds apart. They took a 5-3 lead into the second intermission.
In the third, Tyx scored from Galli to cut the deficit to one goal, but again NJIT would score three-straight to go up 8-4. Two late goals by Maritime by senior Jesse Wynn (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund's Prep) (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund's Prep) and Hempel ended the scoring. McManus and Tyx assisted on Wynn's tally.
In goal for the Privateers, freshman Harris Burger (Davie, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) (Davie, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) made 20 saves. Junior Michael Lipinski made 21 saves for the victory for NJIT.
The Privateers return to action on Friday night, Sept. 30, when they take on ACHA D-III Atlantic Region powerhouse Farmingdale State. Game time is scheduled for 9:40 p.m. at the Freeport Recreational Center Ice Rink in Freeport, Long Island, N.Y.
