Volleyball Drops Final Two Matches At Maritime Classic To Finish In Third Place; Pearson Named To All-Tournament Team

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Sept. 18, 2011) – The SUNY Maritime women's volleyball team lost their two matches on the last day of the 2nd Annual Maritime Volleyball Classic to Maine Maritime and Kings Point. The Privateers overall record falls to 3-4, while Maine Maritime moves to a 10-1 overall mark and Kings Point improved to 5-4.

With a perfect 3-0 record this weekend, the Maine Maritime Mariners captured the tournament championship for the second straight year. Kings Point came in second place with a 2-1 record, while the Privateers finished in third place, going 1-2. Maine Maritime sophomore Melissa Lail was named the tournament MVP. Representing SUNY Maritime on the All-Tournament Team was senior Nicole Pearson (Jamestown, N.Y./Southwestern) (Jamestown, N.Y./Southwestern).

Pearson had a team-high 18 digs over the two matches on Sunday and finished the tournament with 23 digs. She also had five aces and two assists on the weekend.

On Sunday, senior Natalie Jackson (Stockton, Calif./Bear Creek) (Stockton, Calif./Bear Creek) had a team-high nine kills, 10 assists and three service aces over the two matches. Junior Jerrica Romero (Bronx, N.Y./Herbert H Lehman) (Bronx, N.Y./Lehman) registered seven kills and nine digs.

The Privateers return to action on Wednesday, when they play host to Sarah Lawrence College in a rescheduled contest from last week's postponement. First serve is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium.
