THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Sept. 15, 2011) – The Maritime women's volleyball team erased a two-set deficit, to come from behind and defeat Yeshiva University, 3-2 (21-25, 19-25, 25-13, 25-22, 15-6) Thursday night at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium in Skyline Conference action. The win lifts the Privateers to an even 2-2 on the season (1-0 Skyline), while the Maccabees fall to 1-6 (0-3 Skyline).
Four players recorded double-doubles for Maritime, led by freshman Clarissa Silveria (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains), who notched a match-high 15 kills while picking up 11 digs and seven service aces. Junior Jerrica Romero (Bronx, N.Y./Herbert H Lehman) (Bronx, N.Y./Lehman) recorded 13 kills and led all players with 17 digs on the night, while classmate Lauren Johnson (Lansing, Mich./Holt) (Lansing, Mich./Holt) registered 10 kills and 13 digs. Senior Natalie Jackson (Stockton, Calif./Bear Creek) (Stockton, Calif./Bear Creek) was just three kills shy of a triple double with seven kills, 19 assists and 16 digs.
Junior Claudette Killian (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Lima Christian School) (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Lima Christian School) registered a match-high 24 assist and senior libero Nicole Pearson (Jamestown, N.Y./Southwestern) (Jamestown, N.Y./Southwestern) was all over the back row, picking up 14 digs.
The Privateers fell behind early – losing the first two sets by the close scores of 25-21 and 25-19 – but came out strong in the third set. Maritime hit the ball much better, at .320, in the third set, as opposed to the .114 and .122 clips in the first two and won the set 25-13 to make the match two sets to one in favor of Yeshiva.
The fourth set was back and forth, with the Macs starting out on an 11-4 run, before the Privateers came right back and eventually tied the set at 16-16. The Privateers won the race to 20 points, and then allowed Yeshiva to come right back to within two points twice, before winning the set, 25-22, and forcing the final, decisive fifth set.
There was no doubt the momentum stay with Maritime, as they easily won the fifth set, 15-6, to cap off the comeback victory.
The Maccabees were led by junior Sarit Zukowsky, who had a team-high 13 kills and picked up 11 digs. Junior Moriah Green had 20 assists, while sophomore Jackie Berger recorded a team-high 15 digs. Sophomore Shira Genauer and junior Ashley Ansel each registered double-digit digs with 14 and 11, respectively.
The Maritime volleyball team returns to action this weekend, when they host the Second Annual Maritime Classic. The Privateers will welcome in Maine Maritime, Massachusetts Maritime and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point for six matches over two days. First match gets underway at 5 p.m. Saturday night, Sept. 17, when Maine Maritime will take on Kings Point, before Maritime's home showdown against Mass. Maritime at 7 p.m.
