Volleyball Wins One Of Three At Panther Invitational To End Long Losing Streak

WESTBURY, N.Y. (Sept. 10, 2011) – The Maritime women's volleyball team opened the 2011 season at the Panther Invitational on Saturday, taking on Old Westbury, Sarah Lawrence and Farmingdale State. After dropping the first match to the host Panthers in straight sets, the Privateers defeated Sarah Lawrence, 3-0, to end a 22-match losing streak. In the final match of the day, Farmingdale State defeated Maritime, 3-0.

With a roster that features only three returners from last year and six newcomers, the Privateers open the season with a 1-2 overall record under first year head coach Liz Praetorius.

The Privateers were led by junior Jerrica Romero (Bronx, N.Y./Herbert H Lehman) (Bronx, N.Y./Herbert H Lehman), who recorded a team-high 12 kills on the day to go along with 15 digs and six blocks. Junior Claudette Killian (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Lima Christian School) (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Lima Christian School) had 24 assists and 10 digs over the three matches. Junior Lauren Johnson (Lansing, Mich./Holt) (Lansing, Mich./Holt) and freshman Charlotte Acklin (Lewes, Del./West Broward (Fla.)) (Lewes, Del./West Broward) each recorded 11 kills on the day. Johnson had led Maritime with 21 digs.

Senior libero Nicole Pearson (Jamestown, N.Y./Southwestern) (Jamestown, N.Y./Southwestern) and freshman Clarissa Silveira (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) both had 10 digs for the Privateers on the day.

Maritime returns to action on Tuesday night, Sept. 13, when the squad plays host to Sarah Lawrence College in the home-opener at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
