THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (April 16, 2011) – The Maritime men's lacrosse team lost on the road to Farmingdale State, 11-6, in the Skyline Conference regular season finale Saturday afternoon in Long Island. The loss drops the Privateers' record to 6-8 (4-2 Skyline), while the Rams improve to 7-4 (4-0 Skyline).
The Privateers had six different goal scorers on the day. Senior Seth Collins (Owego, N.Y./Owego Free Academy) and junior John Driscoll (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) each recorded a goal and an assist apiece, while senior Alexander Korb (Islip, N.Y./Islip) had two assists. All three had a team-high two points.
Defensively, Maritime was led by senior TJ Beaudette (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) and junior Ryan Honey (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point), who each had a team-high five groundballs. Honey was also 7-for-10 from the faceoff-X. Beaudette and junior Steven Tonn (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) matched the game-high with three caused turnovers apiece, while Tonn and Driscoll both had four groundballs. Senior goalie Keith Messina (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) tallied eight saves in the losing effort.
Farmingdale scored first and Maritime tied it up less than three minutes later when senior Ryan Korb (Islip, N.Y./Islip) scored from Driscoll. The teams then alternated goals throughout the rest of the half and the game was tied 4-4 at the end of the two quarters. The Privateers got goals by Collins from Alex Korb, senior Andrew Marklin (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East) unassisted and Driscoll from Collins.
In the second half, the Rams scored the only two goals of the third quarter and the first goal of the fourth to take a 7-4 lead. Sophomore Matthew Messina (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) then found the back of the net off a pass by senior Jesse deBoer (Ridge, N.Y./McGann Mercy) and just six seconds later senior Michael Hanratty (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) scored to make it 7-5 off a free from Alex Korb. Farmingdale opened its lead up, however, by scoring the next four goals to grab the 11-6 victory.
The Rams were led by junior Jimmy Owsinski, who scored four goals to lead all players in goals and points. Three other players – senior Wes Hubschmitt (2G, 1A), junior Tim Caden (1G, 2A) and junior Ryan Oswald (2G, 1A) – recorded three points for Farmingdale State. Caden had a game-high seven groundballs. In goal, senior Brian Nerney stopped 11 Maritime stops to earn the win.
Now the Privateers will wait to find out the opponent and location of their first round matchup of the 2011 Skyline Conference Tournament. Championship seedings will be determined after the final day of conference action next weekend.
In the meantime, Maritime will travel to Hackettstown, N.J., on Wednesday, April 20, for a non-conference matchup against Centenary College. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Cyclone Field. Please note the time change for this game, as it will now begin at 2 p.m. in New Jersey.
