THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (March 16, 2011) – The Maritime men's lacrosse team lost at home to arch-rival Kings Point, 19-6, Wednesday night at Reinhart Field. The defeat drops the Privateers' record to 0-5 on the season, while the Mariners improve to an even 3-3.
Sophomore Matthew Messina (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) scored the first goal of the game just over a minute into the game. However, Kings Point tallied six unanswered goals in just four minutes and seven seconds of game time to rocket out to a 6-1 lead. Junior John Driscoll (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) tallied the final goal of the opening quarter off a pass by senior Michael Hanratty (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) to make it 6-2.
In the second quarter, the Mariners scored two goals just 10 seconds apart to go up 8-2, before senior Andrew Marklin (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East) found the back of the net unassisted at 9:37. KP would score three more unanswered to grab an 11-2 lead. Senior Jesse deBoer (Ridge, N.Y./McGann Mercy) scored a man-up goal with 1:10 to play in the second quarter to end the scoring and send the teams into the locker rooms with Kings Point leading 11-4.
Sophomore Theo Greene (Pomona, N.Y./New York Military Academy) opened the scoring in the second half, but the Mariners responded with six unanswered again spanning into the fourth quarter to go up, 17-5. Senior Ryan Korb (Islip, N.Y./Islip) tallied a goal off an assist by senior Seth Collins (Owego, N.Y./Owego Free Academy) before KP ended the scoring with two straight.
Leading Kings Point was led by senior Zach Gray, who tallied a game-high five goals and six assists. Sophomore Michael Ackerman also had five goals, while senior Kevin Dwyer led the way on defense with six ground balls and four caused turnovers.
Senior goalie Keith Messina (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) recorded six saves and picked up a team-high six ground balls. Junior Greg Andrews (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) led Maritime with two caused turnovers.
The Privateers return to action on Saturday, March 19, when they play host to the Massachusetts Maritime Academy at 4 p.m. at Reinhart Field. This will be the final game of a six-game homestand to start the season.
