THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Nov. 9, 2011) – The Maritime hockey team lost to Fordham, 6-4, this past Friday night, but rebounded to defeat New Paltz, 6-2, on Saturday to move its record to 5-4-1 overall on the season, including a 5-2 record in Metropolitan Collegiate Hockey Conference action.
On Friday against Fordham, the Privateers scored the first two goals of the game in the first period. Senior
Daniel Tyx (Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville East) (Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville East) scored off assists by sophomore
Steven Vietri (Bronx, N.Y./Fortress Christian Academy) and senior
Jesse Wynn (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund's Prep) (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund's Prep), before Wynn scored off a pass by sophomore
Dillon Dolansky (Monroe, N.Y./John S. Burke Catholic) (Monroe, N.Y./John S. Burke Catholic). The Rams fought right back to tie it up before the end of the opening period.
Sophomore
Nick Galli (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph By the Sea) then netted the third goal for Maritime off assists by freshmen
Tanner McWain (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) and
Thomas Kirby (Rockaway Park, N.Y./Xaverian) and McWain scored later in the second from Galli to give the Privateers a 4-2 lead. However, in the third period Fordham scored three unanswered goals to earn the victory. In goal, freshman
Harris Burger (Davie, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) (Davie, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) made 24 saves in the losing effort.
Against New Paltz on Saturday, Wynn opened the scoring at 12:45 of the first when he found the back of the net off of passes by Tyx and sophomore
Ross Freund (Westbury, N.Y./Chaminade) (Westbury, N.Y./Chaminade). New Paltz scored the next two goals and took a 2-1 lead in the second period, but freshman
Vincent Pedulla (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey) (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey) scored shortly after to tie the game off an assist by Wynn. Tyx then scored the go-ahead goal off assists by Pedulla and Freund, before senior
Dylan O'Malley-Joyce (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) lit the lamp from sophomores
Josh Hempel (Katy, Texas/Cinco Ranch) (Katy, Texas/Cinco Ranch) and
Jeff Dolan (Floral Park, N.Y./St. Mary's) (Floral Park, N.Y./Saint Mary's) to end the scoring in the second with Maritime ahead, 4-2.
McWain and
Jeff Dolan (Floral Park, N.Y./St. Mary's) both added shorthanded goals in the third. Dolan's was assisted by junior
Frank Castelli (Little Neck, N.Y./St. Francis Prep.) (Little Neck, N.Y./St. Francis Prep.). In goal, Burger made six saves in the first period before giving way to junior
D.J. Gennarelli (Bohemia, N.Y./Connetquot) (Bohemia, N.Y./Connetquot), who earned the win after playing two periods and making 18 saves despite allowing the two goals.
The Privateers will now look forward to two more MCHC games this coming weekend, both on the road. The first is up in West Nyack against St. Thomas Aquinas College on Friday night at 9:10 and the second is Saturday night against Hofstra in Long Beach starting at 8:15 p.m.
