Football Week 11 Preview: Privateers Take On Gallaudet In Regular-Season Finale Friday In Washington, D.C.

        THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Nov. 10, 2011) – The Maritime football team (7-2, 5-1 ECFC) will travel down to Washington, D.C., Friday night, Nov. 11, for the squad's season-finale against the Bison of Gallaudet University (5-4, 4-2 ECFC). Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at GU's Hotchkiss Field.

Privateers Honored Conference-High 11 Times With ECFC Player Of The Week Accolades

        The Maritime football team has had a Player of the Week by the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference 11 times so far in 2011, which ties for the most in the conference with this week's opponent, Gallaudet. After the Week Two win over Western Connecticut, seniors Jamie Spanopoulos (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) and Madison Leary (Tavares, Fla./Tavares) (Tavares, Fla./Tavares) earned Offensive and Special Teams Player of the Week accolades, respectively. Sophomore Tyler Trodden (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) (Putnam Valley, N.Y./JFK Catholic) and junior Thomas Boney (Jacksonville, Fla./University Christian (Fla.)) (Jacksonville, Fla./University Christian) earned offensive and defensive awards, respectively, after the Week Three win over Kings Point.
 

        Leary was again named Special Teams Player of the Week twice more for Weeks Five and Six. After the Week Seven win over Anna Maria, junior Jeremy Garcia (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) was named Defensive Player of the Week and senior Sean Wiggers (Norwood, N.J./Northern Valley Old Tappan (N.J.)) (Norwood, N.J./Northern Valley Old Tappan) earned Special Teams Player of the Week honors.
 

        The Privateers earned their fourth-straight Special Teams Player of the Week award after the Week Eight win when freshman Greg Caneparo (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) got the honor, while Spanopoulos earned his second Offensive Player of the Week honor. Finally, just this past week, freshman Zach Spector (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./St. Anthony’s Prep.) (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./St. Anthony's) was named Rookie of the Week after the 34-13 Week Nine win over Husson.
 
Inside The Series

        Friday's meeting will be the fifth between the two schools since the Bison earned Division III status in the 2007 season. The series is even at 2-2, with the Privateers winning the last matchup during the 2010 season, 21-14, down in D.C.
 

        The winning score came with 1:14 left in the fourth quarter, when Jamie Spanopoulos (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) ran in a four-yard TD  to cap off a seven-play, 47-yard drive. Maritime was led by then-sophomore Joe Dickey (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North (N.J.)) (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North), who rushed for a game-high 98 yards and one TD. On defense, then-sophomore linebacker Pat Lasher (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) recorded a team-high 11 tackles (eight solo and three assisted), including one for a loss of three yards. Then-sophomore Keith Barnes (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) registered nine tackles, including two for combined losses of eight yards and recovered the fourth-quarter fumble.
 
Team Comparison Of National Rankings

        Maritime's offense is currently ranked 133 in the country, but it's rushing offense is 16th with 256.00 yards per game, while the Bison are giving up just 91.22 yards per game on the rush, which ranks 17th in NCAA D-III. On the flip side, Gallaudet's total offense is 97th in the country with 366.33 yards per game, while Maritime's total defense ranks 12th, allowing just 249.44 yards per game.
 

        The Privateers currently rank in the top-25 in the country in eight categories: fifth in passing defense (123.11 ypg), ninth in time of possession (34:07), 12th in total defense (249.44 ypg), 12th in First Downs Defense (allowing just 13.78 per game), 15th in sacks allowed (0.78 per game), 16th in rushing offense (256.00 ypg), 16th in tackles for losses allowed (4.22 per game) and 21st in 3rd Down Conversion Defense (stopping 27.10-percent of third downs).
 

        Gallaudet ranks in the top-25 in six categories: second in tackles for losses (10.67 per game), sixth in turnovers gained (29), seventh in punt return defense (2.44 yards per return), eighth in sacks (3.44 per game), ninth in red zone defense (stopping 56-percent of red zone opportunities) and 17th in rushing defense (91.22 ypg).
 
Maritime Privateer Breakdown

        Maritime's total offense is led by quarterback Tyler Trodden (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic), who has rushed for 438 yards and passed for 723 yards. He ranks second on the team in rushing and has two touchdowns on the ground and three scores via the air. Jamie Spanopoulos (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) is the team's leading rusher and ranks 43rd in the country with 101.0 yards per game (909 total yards). He is also tied for 89th in DIII in scoring with 7.33 points per game (66 total). Junior Fritz Jean (Palm Coast, Fla./Palm Coast (Fla.)) (Palm Coast, Fla./Palm Coast) is the team's leading receiver with 10 catches for 167 yards.
 

        On defense, junior Keith Barnes (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) leads the team in tackles with 84 total (67 solo and 17 assisted), while his 7.44 solo tackles per game ranks fifth in the nation. He also has a team-high nine tackles for combined losses of 24 yards, including three sacks for losses of 14 yards, to go along with one interception and two forced fumbles. Classmate Pat Lasher (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) is second on the squad with 46 tackles.
 

        The Privateers special teams unit is led by Madison Leary (Tavares, Fla./Tavares), who is currently tied for 19th in the country in field goals with 1.22 made per game. He is 11-for-17 on field goals on the season with a long of 47 yards. Leary is also 32-for-35 in PATs and is the teams' primary kicker and punter, averaging 52.3 yards on 55 kickoffs and 37.2 yards on 24 punts. Greg Caneparo (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) is the team's leading returner, returning the ball an average of 24.7 yards on 10 kickoffs and 14.3 yards on nine punts.
           
Scouting The Gallaudet Bison

        Under second-year head coach Chuck Goldstein, the Bison have produced a 5-4 record thus far in 2011, including a 4-2 mark in Eastern Collegiate Football Conference action. The offense is led by junior quarterback Gabriel Paulone, who has amassed 533 passing yards on 35-for-59 on completions with six touchdowns and just two interceptions. He has also rushed for 339 yards, which ranks third on the squad, and four touchdowns on the ground. Gallaudet's leading rusher is freshman Quentin Williams, who has recorded 609 yards on the ground with a team-high seven rushing TDs. Paulone's top receiver is junior Ryne Worsham, who has caught 35 passes for 646 yards and nine touchdowns.
 

        On defense, junior linebacker Tom Pangia has a team-high 78 tackles (55 solo and 23 assisted), including nine for losses of 30 yards and one sack. He has one interception, which he returned 61 yards, one fumble recovery and two forced fumbles. Freshman Jaris Alleyne is second on the squad with 68 tackles (38 solo and 30 assisted).
 

        The special teams unit is led by freshman kicker Vianney Boum Yamb, who has amassed 571 yards on 12 kickoffs (47.6 yards per kick) and junior Shelby Bean is the team's punter, having averaged 34.9 yards on 31 punts this season, landing seven inside the opponent's 20-yard line and two touchbacks. Quentin Williams is the Bison's primary kick returner, returning nine kickoffs an average of 32.6 yards with two touchdowns. Sophomore Nick Elstad has returned 12 punts an average of 7.2 yards.
