Football Week 6 Preview: Privateers Face Becker In Massachusetts Saturday At 4 p.m.

        THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 7, 2011) – The Maritime football team (3-1, 1-0 ECFC) will hit the road this weekend to take on Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) opponent Becker College (1-4, 1-1 ECFC) on Saturday afternoon. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Hawks' Alumni Stadium in Leicester, Mass.

Inside The Series
        This will be the sixth meeting between the two teams, as they have faced each other in each season since Maritime regained Division III status in 2006. The Privateers hold a 4-1 series lead, with the only Becker win coming in 2007 up in Massachusetts.
 
        In 2010, Maritime won in shutout fashion, 23-0, at home in Week Seven. The Privateer defense held the Hawks to just 118 yards of total offense, recorded five sacks and caused two turnovers. Then-junior fullback Jamie Spanopoulos (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) led the Maritime offense with two touchdowns on the day. The first was in the second quarter on a two-yard run to put Maritime up 13-0. His second TD came via a nine-yard pass from then-sophomore Joe Dickey (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North (N.J.)) (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) in the third quarter. Spanopoulos amassed 74 yards on the ground and those nine receiving yards. Dickey had a game-high 89 rushing yards with one rushing TD. Then-junior Madison Leary (Tavares, Fla./Tavares) (Tavares, Fla./Tavares) converted a 38-yard field goal right before halftime.
 
Privateers Honored Five Times With ECFC Player Of The Week Accolades
The Maritime football team has had a Player of the Week by the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference a conference-high five times so far in 2011. After the Week Two win over Western Connecticut, seniors Jamie Spanopoulos (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) and Madison Leary (Tavares, Fla./Tavares) (Tavares, Fla./Tavares) earned Offensive and Special Teams Player of the Week accolades, respectively. Sophomore Tyler Trodden (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) (Putnam Valley, N.Y./JFK Catholic) and junior Thomas Boney (Jacksonville, Fla./University Christian (Fla.)) (Jacksonville, Fla./University Christian)  earned offensive and defensive awards, respectively, after the Week Three win over Kings Point. For Week Five, Leary was again named Special Teams Player of the Week.
 
Team Comparison Of National Rankings
        The Maritime defense moved up eight spots in the national rankings to seventh in the country for total defense, allowing opponents just 211.50 yards per game. The Becker offense is currently 201st out of all DIII schools with just 271.8 yards per game. On the flip side, the Privateer total offense is 128th with 340.75 yards per game, while the Hawks' defense is 141st allowing 364.4 yards per game.
 
        The Privateers' time of possession ranks 3rd among all DIII schools at an average of 36:11 over the four games played thus far. Maritime also ranks in the top-25 in eight other categories: tackles for loss allowed (4th with 3.25 per game), passing defense (9th with 190.0 yards allowed per game), first down defense (11th with 13.25 first downs allowed per game), sacks allowed (12th with 0.50 per game), fumbles lost (tied for 13th with just one), fumbles recovered (tied for 16th with seven), rushing offense (17th with 257 yards per game) and kickoff return (22nd with 24.15 yards per return).
 
        Individually, junior linebacker Keith Barnes (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) is tied for third among all DIII defenders with 8.0 solo tackles per game. Also, his two forced fumbles in four games (0.5 per game) are good for 20th in the nation.
 
        Becker has just one ranking in the top 25 and that is its third down defense. The Hawks rank 17th allowing opponents just 18 first downs on 69 third down attempts (26.09-percent). Individually, freshman returner Kyle Gregg's 15.67 yards per punt return is good for 15th in the country.
 
Scouting The Becker Hawks
        Becker enters Saturday's game with a 1-4 overall record (1-1 ECFC) coming off a 20-14 Week Five victory over Husson in overtime up in Bangor, Maine. In 2010, the Hawks finished the year with a 2-8 record, including a 2-5 mark in ECFC action. Head coach Mike Lichten is in his first season at Becker after serving as Defensive Coordinator last year and the team returns 34 players from the 2010 squad, including 14 starters.
 
        Thus far in 2011, junior quarterback Rob Baker has led the offense with 801 passing yards on 71-of-139 completions with three touchdowns and seven interceptions. His number one receiver has been freshman Corinthian Bostic, who has 252 receiving yards with one TD. The ground game has been led by freshman Tyler Iafelice, who has amassed 179 rushing yards and three scores.
 
        On defense, sophomore defensive back Melvin Booker has a team-high 33 tackles (20 solo and 13 assisted), with three sacks included in six tackles for combined losses of 22 yards. Freshman defensive back Christopher McCarthy is second with 28 tackles, while classmate Marquis Carter ranks third with 20 tackles.
 
        The kicking duties have been split between freshman Chad Bacon and senior Mike Carroll. Bacon has made 2-of-3 field goals and 4-of-5 extra points, while Carroll is 0-for-1 in field goal attempts and is also 4-for-5 in PAT kicks. Junior punter Eric Glynn has averaged 32.8 yards over 32 punts and has landed 10 inside the opponents 20, including one touchback. Freshman kick returner Kyle Gregg has amassed 320 yards on 14 kick returns (22.9 yards per return), while compiling 94 yards on six punt returns (15.7 yards per return).
