Privateers Sail Past NYU-Poly For Second Straight Victory, 73-55

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Jan. 20 2011) – The Maritime basketball team used a strong second half to defeat the Fighting Blue Jays of NYU-Poly Thursday night, 73-55, at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium. Senior Quamel Lyerly (Inwood, N.Y./Lawrence) (Inwood, N.Y./Lawrence) led all players with 20 points and 12 rebounds for his second straight double-double and fifth in the last six games. The Privateers improve to 7-9 overall for the season, 5-6 in Skyline Conference action, while Poly falls to 0-15 (0-11 Skyline).

Five players scored in double-figures for the Privateers, as the squad shot a season-best 50.9-percent in the contest (27-for-53). Junior Mike McSloy (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) tallied 14, while classmate Sam Porte (Harlem, N.Y./H.S. for Math, Science & Engineering) (Harlem, N.Y./H.S. for Math, Science and Engineering) and senior Giovanni Hurley (Brooklyn, N.Y./Middle College High) (Brooklyn, N.Y./Middle College High) each recorded 11 points. Senior Paul Suarino (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) chipped in with 10 point and senior Andrew Geisel (Media, Pa./Penncrest) (Media, Pa./Penncrest) had seven to round out the scoring for Maritime.

The Privateers struggled out of the gate, as the Blue Jays built up an 11-6 lead over the first six minutes of the game. Maritime went on an 8-0 run led by Lyerly and Porte to take a 14-11 lead at 10:32. The two teams traded leads for the rest of the half and Poly went into the locker room up by four points, 31-27.

Maritime opened the second half on an 11-2 run to go up by five points, 38-33. The lead was extended to nine points, 44-35, after a layup by Hurley at 13:46, however, the Blue Jays fought back to within two points immediately. The Privateers used another run, this one the best of the game, 16-2, to take a 16-point lead, 60-44, with 7:20 to play. They wouldn't look back.

NYU-Poly was led by Jason Buckner and Eddie Johnson, who scored 15 points apiece, while Eddie Ortiz contributed 12 points in the losing effort. Cornelius Angus had a team-high six rebounds. The Blue Jays shot just 30.6-percent from the field (19-for-62).

The Privateers hit the road for a Skyline Conference showdown with Yeshiva University this coming Saturday night, Jan. 22. Game time against the Maccabees is scheduled for 8:30 p.m.
