THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Jan. 15, 2011) – On Friday night, the Maritime hockey team defeated ACHA D-II opponent NJIT, 3-2, in its first game back from the winter break at the Parkwood Sports Complex in Great Neck, N.Y. The win, which was the Privateers' fifth straight, improves the team's record to 11-7 overall, while NJIT falls to 9-8.

Freshman Steven Altini (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph By the Sea) scored the game-winning goal on a power play with 15:29 to play in the third period. Altini took a pass from sophomore Frank Castelli (Little Neck, N.Y./St. Francis Prep.) (Little Neck, N.Y./St. Francis Prep.) and got the puck past Highlander goalie Nicholas Raite with help from a screen by freshman Josh Hempel (Katy, Texas/Cinco Ranch) (Katy, Texas/Cinco Ranch). Freshman goaltender Zach Dietrich (Point Pleasant, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) (Point Pleasant, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) made a save on all shots he faced in the third period to preserve the victory. He finished the night with 22 saves.

NJIT leading scorer Corrado Mancini scored the game's first goal at 4:20 of the first period. Junior Greg Dolan (Floral Park, N.Y./St. Mary's) (Floral Park, N.Y./St. Mary's) tied the score at 10:02 of the second when he stole the puck and went in on a shorthanded breakaway, dekeing to the backhand and beating Raite on the gloveside. Hempel scored less than two minutes later on a power play when he tipped in the rebound of a shot by freshman Dillon Dolansky (Monroe, N.Y./John S. Burke Catholic) (Monroe, N.Y./John S. Burke Catholic). Castelli picked up the first of two assists in the game on that go-ahead goal. NJIT responded just over a minute later, however, when Robert Amos beat Dietrich on a scrum in front of the net to tie the score at 2-2.

The Privateers were perfect on the penalty kill in the game, killing off all eight of the Highlanders' power play opportunities. They were 2-for-5 on their own power play chances.

Maritime returns to action tonight, when the squad plays host to Metropolitan Collegiate Hockey Conference-foe County College of Morris. The puck drops at 8:45 p.m. at the Parkwood Sports Complex.
