THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Sept. 23, 2010) – The Maritime women's volleyball team fought back from a 2-0 deficit to force a decisive fifth set against Medgar Evers, but lost in the final game, 15-10, thus losing the match by the score of 3-2. In defeat, the Privateers fall to 0-8 on the season, while the Cougars improve to 6-3 overall.
Medgar Evers won the first and second sets by the scores of 26-16 and 27-25, but the Privateers charged back and took sets three and four 25-14 and 25-21, respectively.
For Maritime, sophomore Jerrica Romero (Bronx, N.Y./Herbert H Lehman) (Bronx, N.Y./Herbert H Lehman) registered a double-double with a match-high 29 digs and 11 kills. Classmate Donna Pellegrino (Valley Stream, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) (Valley Stream, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) also recorded 11 kills to lead the Privateers along with Romero, whilre recording a match-high two blocks.
Sophomore Krystal Miranda (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) had 21 assists on the night to go with seven digs and five kills, while freshman Megan White (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) and sophomore Gina Campbell (Copiague, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) (Copiague, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) recorded 13 and 12 digs, respectively. Miranda also matched teammate, freshman Natalia Martinez-Colon (Allentown, Pa./William Allen ) (Allentown, Pa./William Allen) for the team-lead in service aces with three on the night. Senior co-captain Natalie Warren (Peachtree City, Ga./Homeschooled) (Peachtree City, Ga.) recorded eight assists.
The Privateers return to action on Sunday, Sept. 26, when the squad opens up Skyline Conference action at the Mount Saint Vincent Tri-Match. The Privateers will take on the host Dolphins at 11 a.m., before ending the day with a matchup against the Mount Saint Mary Blue Knights at 1 p.m.
